That attempt to control how the thread is going.

It might be the OP trying to get everyone to answer in ways with which the OP is comfortable, or the thread might get 'taken over' by some other poster who then becomes the dog in the manger, growling at everyone who nips the hay in the 'wrong' way . . . . . .

What do ya think?

I think trying to control other people is foolish on a forum board.

If one asks respectfully, generally speaking, I think people will respond positively.  If, however, the person has a hissy fit and stomps their foot, they are just begging to be made fun of and not taken seriously.

Seems pretty simple.  You get more flies with honey than with vinegar.

I voted that trying to control who posted yet alone how a thread evolved simply leaves a lame impression.

I'm pretty much of the opinion that threads will go where they may.  What starts out as one topic might lead some to think of something connected to it that they might want to discuss.  They might be looking at the topic in an entirely different way.

FR, after read thru

Thanks everyone for participating in this lil patch of random silliness . . . . .

I had another thought about this topic:

One of the things that really marks it as thread domming for me is that frequently it's marked by a kinda super-linear focus on either that particular posters specific stuff (lord knows that describes me all too often) or on the original post (usually fairly narrowly defined) to the exclusion of all else . . . . . It kinda feels like 'thread narcissism', if that makes any sense . . . .

& when I read a post I perceive as 'thread dom-y' I frequently notice that phenom in part because I find myself wondering if the poster realizes that more people are reading the thread than him/herself, the OP, & whoever else is actively arguing . . . . . That kinda 'pay attention to what I want you to pay attention to' kinda thing, without any seeming awareness that this stuff fits into bigger contexts. . . ..

& we all know how self-centered the dom thing is . . . .

As LP pointed out, above, threads tend to wander & just as often as they go disastrously astray they also go to interesting & worthwhile places in the wandering . . .. . . I kinda like that . . . . .

I agree Kia, it makes the thread more like a "natural" convo, with twists and turns.

Often a thread topic starts off in one way and then as posters offer opinions and other points of view, it's take on a life of it's own and evolve (or degrades) in different directions.  Can be quite interesting...or not.

Yeah, I find myself having these very weird moments anymore where I'm in flesh-life convos & I start expecting someone to thread-dom the convo back on subject . . . . .

&, conversely, I wonder why, en-thread, the posters expect people to be so narrowly on-topic given how real-world conversations flit all over the place . ..

One of those oddly absurd juxtapositions that can be almost vertiginous .. . ..

I think at times like that, we humans are strange creatures. Some conversations do stay strictly on topic and sometimes the ones replying don't actually opinionate on the query or they misunderstood what the person was asking. Oft that poses a dilemma.

Ya know, if the thread wanders off topic, it's the op's fault for not expressing him/herself clearly enough and making a straight forward question. The ones who whine most about it are the ones who don't give you all necessary information in the first post. Instead they dribble it out over four pages. This isn't a treasure hunt kids, you want spot on advice then learn to write a clear post.

Rant over.

Out damned typo

Couldn't care less...a thread will always take a certain direction, whether it be the intended direction or not.

I'm not sure what you're saying, but if you're thinking I mean only dom-identified types do this, no, that's not my experience. Some of the most annoying thread dommers I've encountered here are sub-identified or similar . . .. ..
