sugar pumpkins are supposed to be sweet but the pumpkins we had tonight were not sweet at all, nor that tasty.

they did feel completely different inside than carving pumpkins, but other than that I don't know if the pumpkin guy sold us sugars or not.

That's something I've wondered about too, actually. I've bought plain old pumpkins at the supermarket and not always been wowed by the results when I use them in pie. I'm not sure if there's a special variety one should use for eating.

Sugar ARE for eating, or you can get pumpkin pies, and they're meant for baking with.

I'm just thinking that the guy may of ripped us off, and I'm hoping not.

Yes yes put up, hmmmmm... read a basic cookbook and you will learn what size works best, and yes I always use fresh over canned

I called a pumpkin farm, and asked do you carry sugar pumpkins he said yes we picked a bunch out, but they don't taste good like I imagain a sugar pumpkin should, so I'm asking all ya that may have experince since I sure don't.

My recipes all tell you what size, but I doubt we got sugar pumpkins like he said we did.

Sugar Pumpkins..ARE the same pumpkins pies are baked from.
It is catergorized as an EATING pumpkin.. because thats what it is for.. baking pies. Where as a Jack o lantern pumpkin.. isnt edible..nor suitable for pies.

I havent ever heard of ANYONE eating a sugar pumpkin, the way you seemed to eat one today.

Sugar pumpkins..ARE sweeter then Jack O's.. yes... but still... you need to add sugar..and spices to it..for making a pie. I cant imagine it tasting very good OR sweet.. just eating one by itself..

So..thats prob the reason WHY you and your friend didnt enjoy the taste.

suhlut, We put nut meg and cinnamon and butter, and then we put heavy whipping cream and more brown sugar and eggs, which is what the recipe said to do, so it it was seasononed, I just thought you could eat the whole pumpkiin rind seeds goo and all.

Maybe i was wrong. I don't know much about cooking but I'm trying to learn, and I was still really proud of myself.

I've baked sugar pumpkins on many occasions. They are not terribly sweet. Pumpkins are just a kind of squash and are starchy not sweet. The basic rule of thumb is small pumpkins, fit in the palm of your hand, are for eating and big pumpkins are for carving, although I prefer making my own roasted pumpkin seeds from the big jack o lantern pumpkins.

Nothing wrong with being proud of your efforts. And, like anyone learning something new.. you had to start somewhere. Mistakes are made.. Thats how you learn not to do it again.

Its a eating pumpkin.. yes.. but.. sugar pumpkins are not eaten whole.. to make a pie from them, you cut them in half, scoop out the seeds and strings..and then just bake them like that. After they cook and cool down, the insides are scraped, and pureed to make it smooth, and then mixed with the sweetend condensed milk..and all the spices, before ya pour that into a crust and bake.

Pumpkin soup is also made from sugar pumpkins. No real idea how, cause pumpkin soup hasnt ever been something i cared to try cooking.

Eating a sugar pumpkin, the way you seemed to want to tonight, if i were gonna try doing that myself, well, i'd cut it in half...scoop out those seeds and strings.. and then into the hallowed out part, i'd heavily sprinkle it with cinnamon... nutmeg.. and a thin layer of brown sugar, before i baked the halves.

Like i said...everyone makes mistakes... in my family.. its a well known holiday joke... that when my oldest sister cooked her first Turkey....welllllll... she didnt know that there was a neck stuffed up one end..and a bag of gizzards stuffed up the other end... and so, not knowing they were there..she baked her first turkey.. without removing them.

Her husband carved the turkey.. only to find..a few surprises in there. lol
i'm just glad i was young enough, to have missed THAT dinner!...lol

Anyways... i somehow inhereted my mothers cooking talents (she was a kick ass cook..and so am i) without her ever having to teach me a thing. Somehow all my meals, taste just the way she would have made it. How that happened.. i have no idea.. cause she never let kids into HER kitchen.

So... if you need help.. or to run a recipe by me.. i can help it be better understood.

grins or if you are a non-cooker like me lol you just go to the store get a can of pumpkin, add cream cheese, splenda and cinnamon and a lil butter (optional) and microwave and you have pumpkin pie without the crust.

Sugar pumpkins or pie pumpkins aren't sweet. They're better for baking because of the texture. Personally I don't like eating them plain, I far prefer a butternut squash which is a cousin of a pumpkin, or an acorn squash. For those, I simmer the butternut meat in a little water with butter and maple syrup. Acorns I cut in quarters, remove seeds and strings, put a little butter and maple syrup in them and pour water around them in the pan and bake until soft.

Did you add butter and honey or sugar to the pumpkin? Did you use a lot of water (which is a no no)?

Pumpkins I use in pies, breads and muffins. I made a killer pumpkin chocolate chip muffin last week.
Also an apple, pumpkin and coconut bundt cake that the teen and his friends inhaled.

I have a great pumpkin bread recipe somewhere, will try to find the site I got it from and post it. Ha! Got it! http://www.pickyourown.org/pumpkinbread.php Makes two big loaves or three small. Since I own only one big loaf pan and three little ones, I make the three small loaves. Tr it divi, it's the best I've ever used.
