That's a great tip, Calla.

Another trick I use to buffer self employment is to provide why I left/am leaving that position. Many applications will ask for that, but surprisingly few resumes will volunteer it.

I am an HR Director and have lectured, taught, and authored on the subject of resumes and job search.

You should absolutely NOT include your professional dominatrix experience on your professional resume when applying to "normal" companies.  Fix the gap in your resume in some other way (you ran a home based business, you consulted, figure something out).  There are way too many people who would absolutely prejudge you negatively seeing that on your resume.  I'm sorry, but it's true.

Now, if you're applying to the sex-related industry, you should absolutely include it, but for THAT VERSION of your resume ONLY.

If you need help doctoring your resume, drop me a PM and I'll see what I can do to help.

Good luck in the job search!

I wouldn't use the word Dominatrix unless you are looking to work at a kink store or something that dealt with the community.

I'm too lazy to cut and paste the names of the people I agree with so I'll repeat them and hopefully add something.

You can wordsmith being a pro dom, lots of people do that, its not lying and you won't have a gap in work history.

fungasm -> RE: Would you put professional Dominatrix on your resume? (11/10/2009 11:59:33 AM)

I decided that in order to stay in beloved small town, I'm going back to doing photography, mostly fetish photography... so the issue became moot...

I don't know what the answer should be... I also realize that I wasn't ever *really* a professional domme per se... I got paid to tie people up... I did it because I love bondage, and it bothered me that if you wanted to explore bondage you had to do it with someone who had an agenda.

I got out of it- because there was an expectation that I be something I couldn't be... I do do the true domme *thing* very well. I don't want to menace someone (and please don't start flaming me because of the vocabulary.)  You know what I mean-- there are people who need power exchange, and all I wanted to do was help explore the sensations.

I suspect that I will never really need a proper CV.  I don't apply at a group of companies- but rather go to the people where I want to work and tell them why they should hire me.

----- On that note-- thank you all for the replies and advice.

For a professional position, I highly recommend you not to.  Especially if you get paid.  Reason I say this is if you are not reporting income, the IRS and state is going to want their fair share of what you make.  You can risk being audited.  They may look into if you are not having income, where would you get the money for your bills.  You can always say you have a very rich significant other, you use people for money, etc.  But who wants the headaches or aggrivation?  For a resume for someone who you are involved in the BDSM world or if it's a position related to this lifestyle, I would say go for it.

lobodomslavery -> RE: Would you put professional Dominatrix on your resume? (1/16/2010 9:31:47 AM)

I never put that I am identifying as a slave on my resume so I dont think it would be wise to say that You are a Domme. Simply put your BDSM orientation is your own private business, not something for an employer to know and totally irrelevant

I think a CV/Resume should be a static thing.

I don't think that is a good idea in your case because overly diversified resumes SUCK. I do not think experience as an adult entertainer bolsters your credibility as a web designer or vice versa. You may want to consider tailoring the content of your resume to the market you are trying to sell yourself. Even if the person interviewing you has an IQ of 200, they probably won’t grasp your sincerely if you present too many areas of focus.

I change my CV depending on the job I'm applying for. I have one for medical proper career type stuff, and one for part time barmaid jobs, and make changes as appropriate. I certainly wouldn't put proDomme on either of those, but maybe if I was applying to an adult store or somewhere kinky, and I thought they might understand a bit about it.

So I don't think the 1 resume idea would work too well. Don't see why you couldn't get a kinky one and a regular one professionally printed though.

What they said.  It's generally, kinky aspects or not, best to have job-focused resumes to give.

Only if searching for work along the same career path.

(edited to add "if")

I like the idea of having one resume, because I want to have it professionally printed... but I also am considering (this is still something I'm thinking through) applying at places as diverse as Kink dot com (and other adult sites) to other Content Development gigs. Other factors include that I am not ashamed that I have tied people up for a living, and if I don't include it, there is a gap in my work history.

Pros
  • It shows that you are a self-starting, take charge kind of person
  • It raises the salary limits
  • It's possible to be hired just because the person in HR has a kinky streak.
Cons
  • It might lead to unwanted sexual harrassment
  • It might raise the salary limit too high
  • It might be distasteful to the person in HR and keep me from being hired.

Given the qualifier, that you have only resume, would you put pro-domme on *your* resume?   Other thoughts?

Alison

Using one standard CV or resume would be a mistake regardless.

-FR-

No.

-Slightly less fast reply-

Only if I were applying to work at a dungeon or in another sex-based industry.

So in other words...no. [8D]

FR, after read thru

lol

Okay, slightly different take on the whole thing. My career path is such that I wouldn't bother with employment where this issue might be a problem.

My primary allegiance is to 'being a writer', & the teensy bit of pro-domination I dabbled in (&, better, the more I'd be open to doing in the future) are actually potentially 'good' for my career. One of the keys to 'being a writer' is to live a rich, interesting life so as to have somethin' to write about. & one of the places my life has taken me is pro-BDSM-provider. Another is that I'm more than willing to write erotica, it just has to be on my terms, which has been some work to figure out what all that means. But I'm tangenting worse than usual in this post.

Part of it is that I am crap at compartmentalizing life & even worse at keeping secrets or any of that. So, I just wouldn't be able to 'get away with' not disclosing pertinent details.

For instance, I entertain occasional fantasies of someday working for some think-tank, that gets my nipple kinda hard, lol, & I'd certainly want them to hire me because I had such a diversely different perspective from so many in the mainstream. The professional kink provision would be just another facet in my sparkly wonderfulness. Similarly for doing the 'speaking engagements' gig. Edutainment encompasses an awful lot, lol . . . ..

& as for 'day jobs', yeah, I'm preferentially gonna seek out employment where being an alternative personality is neutral or positive. Personally, I'm really liking on working at an adult store, the experience would be awesome. I'm lucky enough to both be able to live on hardly anything at all & to currently be free of the need to do anything other than follow my own muses, but in a few years I'll be back in the more regular work world I suspect.

Okay, & I do admit I've got quite a bit of that Groucho Marx thing, not wantin' to be a member of any club that would have me, lol . . ... When I got close to the end of my undergraduate stat studies & realized that my 'legit career' choices ranged from actuary to quality control manager to research mathematician & academic, I recoiled in horror. Great career choices for other people, not for me. My inner Groucho definitely kicked in -- insurance companies?! Eeeck, ack, grotesque.

Oh, & OP, I think the closer descriptive of what you were doing (in being paid to tie) is 'professional rigger', fyi . . . . & 'vanilla-fied' cover for what you were doing could probably be described as 'tying decorative ropework on people' & / or working as an 'artist' . . .. ..

I agree with *not* putting that in your resume
I would just use consultant instead

Leave it in.  It will insure that someone with more common sense than you will get a shot at the job.

I'd put it on mine, but some folks would be in for a surprise. My strapon is homemade, strictly organic.

I don't need to. I am already in management.

True, but placing it in your resume says that for the right pay that you will be willing to fuck and fire someone that you have never ever met before...You are a true go getter!!!
