I would love to go to this convention some day.

Atheists, agnostics convene in Seattle

SEATTLE - About 600 atheists and agnostics are gathering in Seattle this weekend for the annual convention of the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

Speakers include Seattle radio host Ron Reagan.

A signature event will be the Nonprayer Breakfast Saturday at the meeting at the downtown Red Lion Hotel.

I'm not going anywhere near that place. I've always been scared to death of lightning.

Might be worth turning up just to expose the conspiracy that forced an ex president to fake his own death before turning radio host.

On the agenda:

After sneezing protocol?
Appropriate thing to say after hitting your thumb with a hammer?
How far should public buildings be from the nearest church?
What is the future of atheism?

Heck, i thought atheists didnt have public gatherings. Didnt someone say that on the boards here somewhere?

Fellow -> RE: I would love to go to this some day. (11/5/2009 3:34:54 PM)

I consider myself agnostic. I is OK to discuss things with atheists but, it should be stressed, these are two different philosophies.

Hierodule -> RE: I would love to go to this some day. (11/5/2009 5:02:04 PM)

I consider my self a gnostic (thats gnostic not agnostic, not a typo) atheist.  When it comes to spiritual matter I believe what I believe, what I feel inside, its not static, its constantly evolving, and it has nothing to do with  the existence of deities of any sort. To me deities are symbols not truth. If you *know* the truth you don't need the symbols ImHO.

Would you mind expanding on what a "gnostic atheist" is for me? I'm not familiar with the term.

Next door is fine, as long as the churching stays in the church and the politicking stays in the public buildings and never the twain shall meet.

Living each day as it comes, for all that it is worth. That seems like a good enough future for anything.

DC, a little tongue in cheek. *S*

Anything stopping you?  Greyhound is pretty cheap.

and it has nothing to do with  the existence of deities of any sort.

there is an historic gnostic religion. You can google it if you want to learn more. I'm not getting into that here. Modern day gnostics have almost as many definitions of what it means to be a gnostic today as BDSM people have of the word slave. I call myself a gnostic atheist based on the following two definitions. I would like to think I invented the term but I probably didn't I am sure someone coined it before I did.

(from the gnosis archive)
GNOSTICISM is.. based on Gnosis, the knowledge of transcendence arrived at by way of interior, intuitive means.... Gnosticism expresses a specific religious experience, an experience that does not lend itself to the language of theology or philosophy, but which is instead closely affinitized to, and expresses itself through, the medium of myth.

a·the·ism   (ā'thē-ĭz'əm)
  1. Disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods.
  2. The doctrine that there is no God or gods.
So in other words my personal spiritual experience has nothing to with gods or theism. In fact I *know*, through my own spiritual experiences, that there are no gods. In my personal spirituality gods are characters invented by people to personify truths that are beyond description. I don't need those characters. I have felt the truth under them. Mythology is powerful symbolically. It is not, however, *true*. God exists only in our minds. And all religions are equally false and equally true.

They have 2 short but very interesting ways to test your Biblical knowledge. Look for the "Take a Quiz" link in the "Featured Content" section.

Calla, don't forget the wall to keep the pedophile priests away from the children.

Politicking has always been allowed in churches.

It is a joke.  The Radio shows hosts name is Ron Reagan.  Ronald Reagan was the 40th president of the USofA.  He died in 2004.

If you have to EXPLAIN the joke it is no longer funny.  [>:]

What is the future of Christianity? Attendence has been declining markedly among the mainstream churches in the Western World per news accounts while growing in the storefront charasmatic community. Has Mainstream Christianity forgotten the poor?

Numbers of nonbelievers seem to be growing rapidly in the Western World, especially in Europe. It is not atheists who build grand cathedrals and mega churches, who drape their Princes in plush robes and golden rings and sit them on elabortate thrones, or who preach the "Gospel of Prosperity" as homage to modern casino capitalism.

Allowed by who? I was of the understanding that Federal Tax Exemption status prohibited politicking in church.

Or are you just wise-cracking about my Wall comment?
