I havent read the whole thread, so I do not know if this has been covered.
I understand that it's general practice and heartwarming to explain the christian version of christmas, but is it correct to do so? Would it not be more appropriate to explain the origins of Santa and leave out the whole wise man thing - which is only the commercial version of christmas?
In kinder folklore, Santas(Odins) presents were a barter gift for grain and fodder for Odins horse (which flying reindeer come from). In less kinder folklore, naughty children were captured and taken away whilst good children were allowed to stay with their families.
For the more western approach, St Nicholas (who Santa is also based upon)was supposedly a kind man who help give gifts to the poor - and notorious for doing so 'secretly'.
My children have always understood that christmas isn't about getting anything, but by helping and giving to others. And if they get something, then they should accept with grace and thanks.
