Lemme guess, the gunman is a Presbyterian, right?

It was about time there was an opportunity to express anti-Muslim sentiment in this country. Instead of concentrating on the fact that a person that does something like this is mentally deranged, let's castigate all Muslims. It makes so much more sense.

LaTigresse -> RE: Ft Hood Shooting - 12 Dead 31 wounded (11/6/2009 8:15:24 AM)

And let's forget that as a psychiatrist dealing with soldiers that have been deployed 3-4 times, PTSD, being harassed constantly since 9/11 for being a Muslim....... no, none of that could have had ANYthing to do with it....

As Generic Dude said last night, in-between fielding calls and texts from his former soldiers, "I am only surprised this hasn't happened before, and more frequently. There will be more if the military leaders do not wake up."

servantforuse -> RE: Ft Hood Shooting - 12 Dead 31 wounded (11/6/2009 8:28:47 AM)

I thought Obamas press conference to discuss the shooting was just great. He joked around for 3 minutes before even mentioning what happened at Ft. Hood. I guess they forget to update the teleprompter..

FR

When I see the reports in cases like this often you hear of people calling the suspect a nutjob or telling how in the past the suspect said this or that and his behaviour was strange in this way. It kind of makes me wonder why things like this then come suddenly out of the blue and why those same people talking of the persons irrational behaviour didn't make it known. You could argue that he may have been under investigation inside the organisation but for these people to be recounting such stories now you'd also expect to read some story in the news from such leaks in the past. I think you have to take some of these statements with a pinch of salt and suspect that it isn’t as straightforward as it is being made out to be.

For example it was initially reported at one point he was a Muslim convert but some family member then said he had been a Muslim all his life and member of the military for years before 911. Interesting how some news organisations try to create these stereotypes in absence of the actual facts. Speculation is rather pointless but the reality of the 24 hour news system is there is often more speculation than facts as they have to give the impression new facts are coming to light all the time which isn’t correct.

Probably when the dust settles the conclusions will be that this case is similar to shootings in schools where someone who feels isolated from the group loses the plot. That typical behaviour mixed in with his mad moral crusade about the wars.

Let us also not forget that No One made this man choose this profession to which such troubled issues would be confided to him in the first place. Let us also not forget that this man was pretty much a loner with little interaction with others that would lower the bar on encounters of actual harrassment unless he himself may have been just as involved in instituting by his own words to begin with.

LaTigresse -> RE: Ft Hood Shooting - 12 Dead 31 wounded (11/6/2009 8:42:45 AM)

you must be assuming that I am condoning this soldier's behaviour...........I am not, I am only expressing my thoughts, and those of several military personel I know, on why this may have happened and the necessity for the military to make changes to avoid it happening again. Until now, there has been a distinct, head in sand, approach to soldier mental wellness. I fail to see how religioun absolutely MUST play into this particular issue at all.

sublindsay -> RE: Ft Hood Shooting - 12 Dead 31 wounded (11/6/2009 8:58:23 AM)

I agree starshine, no one made him choose this profession. If you go into the mental health field, you know what type of things you are going to be dealing with. And if you choose to go into the mental health field in the military, you should have figured what types of issues you were dealing with. They aren't out there playing war games with paintball guns, its all real. If you join the military, know what you are getting yourself into, so let's NOT paint this worthless garbage as any type of a victim.

And the comment about being harrassed all the time since 9-11? I call bullshit on that one too. Having spent quite a bit of time on a military base myself (my dad was in the army) i can assure you that officers with the rank of Major don't get shit from other soldiers. If you harrass a superior officer, you'll get thrown in the brig! That type of stuff is NOT tolerated at all, i mean its the Army, people! They have order and a chain of command. You don't fuck with the people who are above you or else. So unless there were a bunch of lt. colonels, colonels and generals (the only ranks above him), that had nothing better to do then harrass a psychiatrist, i highly doubt this was happening. Just an excuse that some worthless people will make in trying to excuse a person's horrific actions. Thank God this guy will get military justice and not the sham that our courts often are, with a bloodsucking lawyer trying to make someone else out to be the bad guy.

I say, as a punishment, you just put this guy in a locked room with about a dozen special forces soldiers, let them sort it out.

FR - Gotta love the fact that it was a woman who brought the shooter down.

My sons roommates wife is one of the SWAT team members hurt. She was shot in the leg and is unconscious- the roommate is trying to get a flight out there right now. My son just told me about it, I can't believe I saw this upon getting to this section of CM. Thanks for the info...

Found out this morning that this is the same woman who brought the shooter down. She's all over the news today. What a brave individual! My son said the roommate left about an hour or so ago to fly out to TX. I can't even imagine the media storm that awaits him when he gets there.

I was wondering about that ever since I heard this morning that he was shot by a woman police officer he'd already wounded. Good for her! She's a hero. I wonder how many lives she saved? I hope she comes out of this alright.

She's definitely a hero. She ran head first into bullets being fired in order to stop others from getting hurt and not thinking of herself. She and her hubby have 2 small ones too. She shot the shooter 4 times even though she was hit in the femoral artery - which is why she was unconscious when she got to the hospital. Loss of blood. My son said she is stable now and recieving blood in the hospital.

I did not assume anything. I merely counter pointed issues that you felt might of played a factor. I no more made religion a factor any more than you did by stating "harrassment". Other soldiers mental health issues are not part of this topic. Surely being a counselor for such he'd know who to go see if he had his own legitimate issues aside from not wanting to be deployed.

Jesus. People like that are rare. I hope to god she's alright. Her poor husband must be a wreck.

It turns out a neighbor of mine was one of those killed. He had a wife and 3 small kids.  He was Hmong; his father worked with the CIA and fought alongside American Special Forces in Southeast Asia, then  emigrated here to give his family a chance at a better life. The son was reportedly worried about joining the military and leaving his wife and children behind, but he felt he owed it to this country for giving his family a chance at a new life. I've never met him, but from the family pictures they're showing on TV I know I've seen his wife walking in the park near my house. We have a huge Hmong community in this part of town. Good people, you couldn't ask for better neighbors. This is so sad on so many levels.

It seems to me his job was to evaluate mental disorder...how ironic is that. What do you think they need to do LaTigresse?

I won't answer for LaTigresse, but my response to the question would be - bring ALL the troops home from everywhere, and let the locals sort it out.

She IS alright....she's going to recover. Her husband was a wreck last night...he couldn't get out of NC where he is stationed with my son at Ft Bragg and get to her until today. I kept asking my son to check and see if there was something I could do for the husband or his family and he said the answer was no but he wasn't sure the guy even knew that he was talking to him.

I am so so sorry to hear about your neighbor. It's a tragedy to know that he left a family behind. To know that this man felt he should pay this country back for the chance at a new life is incredibly honorable. Wow.

The saddest thing to me is to know that this happened to our soldiers while they were here at home and not off at war. I agonized over my son being gone for 2 deployments to Iraq but to know that he could have been (and could be now) hurt or killed here in America is profoundly disturbing.

LadyPact -> RE: Ft Hood Shooting - 12 Dead 31 wounded (11/6/2009 11:30:51 AM)

I'll second that part, Merc.

If I were to speculate, I'd say it's more a case of the guy snapped.  Him being Muslim is only part of the equation.  The upcoming deployment and his particular profession within the military play a role in this.  The guy hadn't been at Hood that long.  His prior assignment had been at Walter Reed for six years.  It kind of makes you want to ask yourself, if you were hearing all of the horrors of war and seeing what the guys came back like physically and mentally for YEARS, how well do you think you'd do knowing you had an upcoming deployment?

I'd be all for it if I thought it would work and guarantee our safety. But I think we all know that has not worked in the past and will not happen in the future.

I really would like to know what could be done… I mean it wasn’t as though this was out of the blue…at least from the reports we are getting.

I know many years ago the Corps was very aware of the mental health of its soldiers…I wonder what has changed?
