House Republicans Offer Health Overhaul Plan

Unlike the Democratic bill, the Republican version "would not require people to obtain insurance or require employers to offer it. ... It would not expand Medicaid or offer federal subsidies to low- and middle-income people to help them buy insurance." The proposal also "would not explicitly prohibit insurers from denying coverage to people because of pre-existing medical conditions, even though many Republicans have said they agree with Democrats that the federal government should outlaw such denials" (Pear and Herszenhorn, 11/3).

So why waste time “overhauling” nothing? Talk about disingenuous.

Talk about strawmen. The author of the article calls it an overhaul plan, not the authors of the bill. The health care system doesnt need overhaul.

I don't think 'strawmen' means what you think it means.
I don't think 'The health care system doesnt need overhaul.' means what you think it means.

I'm pretty sure willbeur is operating on a "strawman" quota....he gets a set of steak knives if he uses the phrase in 100 posts.

I'm glad we have that settled now.

(Except, of course, for the millions of people who believe it does.)

Odd how a 10% unemployment rate has everyone up in arms, but that same number (and then some) have no insurance and we are supposed to be happy about that.

85 % of Americans have insurance that they are happy with. I am one of them. Leave us alone and spend the money on the 15 % who don't have insurance.Don't blow up the whole system.

Polls are basically a reflection of how the question is worded:

Poll: Health care costs too expensive, Americans say - CNN.com

More than eight in 10 Americans questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Thursday said they're satisfied with the quality of health care they receive.

And nearly three out of four said they're happy with their overall health care coverage.

But satisfaction drops to 52 percent when it comes to the amount people pay for their health care, and more than three out of four are dissatisfied with the total cost of health care in the United States.

And more than 3 out of 4 are dissatisfied with how much they pay for an ice cream cone. what an asinine statistic.

I pay $239.00 on the 'budget' plan for my gas and electric every month. I am not happy with that either. I still pay it. Why should insurance be any different ? Maybe the federal govt. should pay that for me to..

There are many really simples, Arpig. and they wont happen. all we can do is hope and pray for the best, cringe then smile when its not the worse, and deal with the mess inbetween.

I would agree, but what you guys are going to get is just more of the same with a bit of window dressing to make it look all shiny and new...just about the worst case scenario in fact. there is one, and only one solution to the health care issue in the US, and you guys will get there eventually, but its going to take a long time and will cause a lot more needless grief and suffering while you wait and watch Congress dither and kowtow to their corporate masters.

Already private insurance companies are jacking prices once again... in my opinion in anticipation of losing money over "a reform" that isnt a reform on the scale we need. When they are paying up to 5000 dollars a deductable each year before their insurance kicks in, lets see how much people like what they got.

We should agree on Single Payer like the rest of the civilized world. Besides, the doctors are for it.

Choosing healthcare is a highly dubious freedom. In many areas in the US, and in many occupations, you really don't have the grand choice we hear so much about. The insurance and pharmaceutical industries create monopolies pure and simple, and the price you pay far exceeds the value of the product. Not to mention that the CEOs reinvest their surplus in other negative industries, like wall street and even big tobacco.

A recent report from the New England Journal of Medicine provides a stunning example of the contradictions of the American business model.
