That one I hadn't seen. But the first study seems to indicate not so much that redheads have more pain, but that novocaine and lidocaine are less effective on redheads. And that if they were given pain meds that did work on them, they might not need extra medication.

Looks like the more we learn, the more we need to know.

Yep. [:)]

All I know is that I will not be signing up for any comparison test against the redheads around here. (or any other color for that matter)

I can't site the source (so don't ask, damnit) but i read that redheads actually have a higher than average tolerance for pain, and a slightly higher immune system.

I know i have a very high pain tolerance in relation to BDSM, and i rarely get sick.[sm=dunno.gif]

frazzle -> RE: a question of hair (11/6/2009 12:04:52 PM)

I go off for a couple of hours to cook dinner, and certain people are giving Him way too much info [:D]

And i rarely get ill, have high pain tolerance. good job as am allergic or immune to all pain killers.

Now how do we hide this before He gets home from work[&:] i like sitting down.

Don't wallow in persecution complex- Redheads think *everyone* is there for their own amusement.

I am pleased to see that someone has finally figured this out!  [sm=rofl.gif][sm=rofl.gif][sm=rofl.gif][sm=rofl.gif][sm=rofl.gif]

yanno...this is interesting. Pain killers (the good ones!) make me feel like i took a hit of speed.

Researchers have found that people with red hair require greater amounts of anesthetic, however this is controversial and other research publications have concluded that women with naturally red hair require less of the painkiller pentazocine than do either women of other hair colours or men of any hair colour. A study showed women with red hair had a greater analgesic response to that particular pain medication than men.[36] A follow-up study by the same group showed that men and women with red hair had a greater analgesic response to morphine-6-glucuronide.[37]

Redheads Need More Anesthesia to Block Pain Genetics Likely Involved in Dosage Required to Put 'Under' By Jeanie Davis WebMD Medical News Oct. 15, 2002 -- That fiery redhead spirit! It seems that redheads require more anesthesia to "go under" than other hair colors do -- about 20% more. A new study has implications for redheads who require surgery. It also gives researchers a better understanding of how anesthesia works in humans. Red hair is the first visible human trait, or phenotype, to be linked to anesthesia, says study author Edwin B. Liem, MD, a researcher with the University of Louisville, in a news release. The link is likely due to an improperly functioning receptor on certain cells that give pigment to people's skin and hair, he explains. Liem says this dysfunction triggers a feedback mechanism that increases release of the hormone that normally stimulates these cells. This hormone also stimulates a brain receptor that increases pain sensitivity. "In a nutshell, redheads are likely to experience more pain from a given stimulus and therefore require more anesthesia to alleviate that pain," he says.

Interesting article.

It has me wondering...both a close friend and myself (redheads) have a very very difficult time recovering from any anesthesia...and i am pretty sure the doses given were normal for our height/weight. Hmmm.....

frazzle -> RE: a question of hair (11/6/2009 12:24:56 PM)

That was a bit deep, but should keep his grey cells working for so long, i'll be safe.

As to the pain thing, yep i feel it and some, but seem to process it.

My medical records now state no morphine etc unless death is the required outcome. They tried it twice just to make sure. Those electric shock things are not fun unless called a violet wand.

Now can we go back to stupidity, but not the kind that gets me in trouble[:D]

DesFIP -> RE: a question of hair (11/6/2009 12:28:58 PM)

I was a true auburn when young and anesthesiologists don't listen when I say I need very little to go under and stay under. And then they get very upset when I don't come out of it. Well I did tell them.

Although I amused the nurses no end after the gallbladder was removed by saying "ten more minutes. just another ten minutes. ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"

Paying attention to what holly says will only get you in trouble....and might cause accidental falling over completely invisable objects!
