try going 2 or more days straight w/o sleep... stupid stupid chemical in balance....  ive tried everything from heavy sleep meds to hypnosis and doing routines:( meh it sucks as it is ive been awake since friday at 3 am it is saturday at 7 am now

Been there, done that.  A LOT!!!  I discovered that if I went 2 days without sleep, I would generally sleep the 3rd.  I also discovered that going shopping on no sleep was a very very bad idea.  I would find all sorts of things that I NEEDED.  Then after getting some sleep, I would find these things & wonder why the hell I thought I really needed those things.  [8|]

Could it be because most sleeping tablets are only meant to be used short term ie. for a couple of weeks.  We build up a tolerance to them and they lose effectiveness.  One of the purposes of sleeping tablets is to get your body used to sleeping and also get it back into a routine so it can be helpful to take the tablets and once you have two nights of sleep in a row try the third night without them, and repeat the pattern gradually weaning yourself off the tablets. [:)]

I know wanders theyve tried other things too.. they think it is cause of pain and chemical inbalance shrug... what ever reason it is i get work done late at night so that is good and i get to catch up on tv i missed while working lol

Llyren -> RE: The insomniacs club (11/23/2009 2:02:13 AM)

I have trouble falling asleep.  I think it ties in with a general inability to 'let go' in almost all areas of my life.  Once I'm asleep, I'll usually sleep well, but I can't actually go to sleep till I'm utterly exhausted, and not always then.  I refuse to use nyquil or booze to knock myself out, so I just hang out online in the middle of the night.

Ashleigh77 -> RE: The insomniacs club (11/23/2009 10:50:31 PM)

I have been a diagnosed insomniac for years now, for a while I tried meds like Ambien or Lunesta but could not live with the side affects. I have tried melatonin as well nothing helps. I can usually fall asleep ok but wake up after a few hours with my thoughts racing in my head and its like my body wants to sleep but my mind just won't stop. It is a horrible problem I would not wish it on any one...

I have the same problem, Ashleigh.  My mind just will not stop working, so I can't fall asleep.

subtlebutterfly -> RE: The insomniacs club (11/24/2009 1:12:42 AM)

I don't know why...it's not my mind that's always keeping me away sometimes I'm thinking absolutely NOTHING and I still can't sleep.. it's shit....and of course I was almost falling asleep when I had to wake up[:'(] *rant* I'm starting to think it's either genetic or the location.[>:]

sophiesback -> RE: The insomniacs club (11/24/2009 1:19:22 AM)

It can be genetic. my dad is also an insomniac... we took the same meds to sleep forever before we both gave them up.

Hey Llyren

I was beginning to think it was rather ironic that I was the only person up and awake in the insomniacs club. I'm the same way, those PM pills drive me nuts. When they finally do seem to work it's just about the time I need to get up. Otherwise I would sleep all day long. Sigh.

Llyren -> RE: The insomniacs club (11/24/2009 3:50:35 AM)

I've had that happen to me.  I take the so-called 'sleeping' pills, and still can't fall asleep.  The real problem  comes when they knock me out and/or make me groggy and unable to function for 20 hours.  I seem to have an odd metabolism anyway, but it's frustrating that there isn't any sort of pill that will knock you out quickly, then leave your system.

Hee hee.  There is one that works for me.  Temazepam.  It is a hypnotic and a vallium derivitive.  It is supposed to be habit forming, although I had no problems in that area.  I also had no after effects.  You might suggest it to your general doctor or your sleep doctor.

Liz,

From what I understand, there is no "typical insomnia."  There is actually a different diagnosis that they will give you.  Possibly for you ~ chronic middle insomnia.  You may need to be taking some sort of pain med at night.  You really do need to talk to your doc, as not sleeping enough (6 hours or less) increases your chance of an early death by about 15%.

I agree, it's that groggy feeling when I wake up. Feels like I haven't slept at all. Ugh
