I had a heart attack this past Tuesday morning.  If had not been that I was given 2 asprin immediately, the Doctor said I would never have made it to the hospital.  So a word to all of you out there...  Carry Asprin with you wherever you are, you never know when you or some one around you will need it to save their lives...

First...so very glad you are here to say this. Take care of yourself. A heart attack survived should be one hell of a wake-up call.

Some people want to crush them, thinking they will work faster. Don't do it!! You want to take the aspirin to save your life, not choke you. And an aspirin in an emergency needs to be a non-enteric coated tablet. The enteric coating will save the stomach by dissolving in the intestine. Nice for every day use, but if you are having a cardiac crisis, do you really care you might get gas?

Everyone over 40, or with a lifestyle less than ideal, high cholesterol level, etc., should take to their PCP about taking either a baby aspirin (81mg) or an adult aspirin (325mg??) everyday.

Adult dosing is too high for taking every day; there is risk of stomach upset and iritation

That would depend upon the patient and his or her doctor's prescription. My doctor has put me on a daily 325mg aspirin which I have been following for the past four years. The secret here is for it to be enteric coated.

I'm glad you pulled through. I hope this event hasn't left you with sideeffects and consequences and I hope you'll stay healthy from now on.

A 75mg Aspirin is an enough daily dose for blood thinning, it is common to give bigger doses in emergency. It is also necessary, after a myocardial infarct, to take statins for the blood cholesterol and people who have high cholesterol should take them as well as a prophylaxis for coronary artery disease.  Also make sure to regularly check your blood pressure and keep it under 140/90.

Aspirin has a lot of side effects so having to take blood thinning like that in such high doses, it would probably be easier to get adequate blood thinning using warfarin, which has a much smaller side effect profile.

I don't know about the protocols where you come from but in my hospital the guidelines say that if you need more potent anticoagulation than a 75mg aspirin, then warfarin is the ideal.  But if it works for you and you don't have any side effects than all is good.

I need the daily aspirin for stroke prevention, not heart attack prevention. I have a long history of having TIAs/strokes, the source of which has baffled every doc I've seen (and there have been at least a dozen of them throughout my life) so this aspirin regimen is the latest attempt at controlling the events. Since starting on it, the number of TIA/stroke events have been reduced about 40% which means I'm a lot closer to living a so-called normal life than I had been prior to the asiprin prescription. Thus far, there have been no side effects noticed in taking all that aspirin.

At first, I was on Plavix and a lower dose of aspirin, but blood chemistry came back askew that appears to have been caused by the Plavix so it was dropped in favor of the higher dose of aspirin. My blood chemistry is back to normal, so the docs assume I was having some sort of reaction to the Plavix. They are happy to keep me on the aspirin only treatment for now as my blood work has been normal since stopping the Plavix.

I stand corrected. Is taking the enteric coated aspirin enough to prevent stomach upset or do you also take it with meals?

my husband takes an adult aspirin daily (the Dr told him to do that instead of the baby dose)

I've not had any stomach issues from taking the enteric coated aspirin alone, without any food. I have had problems with uncoated aspirin and, if that's all I have available at the time, I will absolutely take it with a meal.

Wow Stepon, I just about had a heart attack reading that! You work too hard... push too hard... be good!

I am soooooooooo glad you had help and all was okay and will hope that you can get things worked out so this doesn't happen again!

I heard about a new way of handling when someone stops breathing and watched a program on it. I believe they are doing it in AZ. and it is heart compressions rather than mouth to mouth. If I am remembering correctly. It was very interesting and they said that they have far more survival rates since starting this new way. I wish I could remember what news channel it was on.

I cannot take asprin which would be good for my strokes... but could cause a bleed. So it is a double edged blade. But if I had the heart going, I think I would take my chances, but I can't use it every day. Lots of things thin the blood and I try to use a bit of one thing or another and be very moderate about it. I know asprin worked for an ex boyfriend when he had a problem while in the hot tub. I don't ever want to go through something like that again and I now insist on regular medical check ups and such.

Darn, I can't edit my post. I knew I was forgetting something vital! I'm going to need to revise how I do a few things.

I think it was in AZ that they have used this new treatment for heart attacks and it is cooling the body down. I kept thinking as I typed that they cooled the body, but it was such a forien thought to me these days that my memory wouldn't accept it as true. Sorry it's from the strokes...newer info can be distorted. Hell older info can be too. I knew it was correct when I woke to a news program talking about it again! It was on CNN with the regular doctor they have on a few of the news shows.

There was a report this morning on a man who had a problem and his pulse stopped for forty or forty five minutes and he is now fine. That's what woke me up. They then said that they had cooled his body down and I remembered and thought... omg... messed up again Lucy... they really do, do that now. I better go confess and give the real important news.

So I am sorry I went off with half a brain!
