ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: What do you think of Obama now that he has been in office awhile? (11/15/2009 12:58:03 PM)

I've made no secret of my disappointment with the man. I'm afraid I've developed a pretty low opinion of his character, and I'm troubled by his detached, hands-off leadership style on critical issues - for example, I blame much of this current debacle in the health care issue on his refusal to lay out a clear vision and get down and dirty from the outset, and while that is the most egregious example of his reluctance to roll up his sleeves and duke it out, it's by no means the only one. He picks his fights far too cautiously for me, always with one eye apparently on the polls. One thing that I am happy about is that getting kicked around as much as he has the last couple of months seems to have knocked some of the arrogance out of him. He was far too cocky the first few months, apparently confusing bullying with being tough. I think that's something that's come back to haunt him in his dealings with the republicans in congress, and hopefully he's learned from it. He seems to have learned not to shoot his mouth off so much about things that are none of his business (Kanye West, the Harvard professor, etc...), which is a sign that he may be getting a little more humble. We'll see. I try to be cognizant of the fact that the man is walking into the middle of the biggest mess that any president has inherited in almost 80 years, and to cut him as much slack as i can on that. But at the same time, the bottom line is results, and he's getting dragged around the yard and rolled in like a dead possum right now on one of the most important issues this country has faced in decades - the health care debate. He's about to fuck that up beyond the point of unfucking, and I lay the lion's share of the blame on him. He seems to be a very intelligent man, so he may still learn from his mistakes and turn himself into a pretty good president, but he's dug himself a pretty damned deep hole. At this point I wouldn't bet a dime on him ever becoming the president I'd hoped he would be.
