As a former Republican, watching it degenerate into Tea Party madness is like watching your family members join a cult and shave their heads. What used to be a party of reason and caution is now the party of radical faith in abstract theologies, free from any empirical evidence, cut loose from the moorings of responsibility and motivated mostly by ethnic and class rage hidden under a phony patriotism and populism.

That is a great comment!

It is a great comment and I'd just like to encourage the dissatisfied old school conservatives to either take back your party or found and support a new one. America needs you.

Get past that, Serv.  I don't think there is any hope anymore of her not at least dipping a toe into the primaries, but she'll never get past resigning as Governor (and thank God for that).

I agree.  She is seeing the dollar signs, and is cashing out. Running for office again would amount to a pay cut for her.

I agree she will never get past resigning as Governor but disagree that this is not her attempt to test the waters for a Presidential run.

If you go back to the Barbara Walters interview Kittin posted earlier, Walters asks her point-blank about a 2012 run and she not only refused to rule it out but made it pretty clear that she would if she thought she had the support, without coming right out and saying that.

Obama himself argued that having troops tied up in Iraq was the wrong focus, that the real job was in Afghanistan, and if you agree with that then we need to commit the resources necessary to getting the job done. Personally, I think they're both wrong. I'd like to see us get out of there. But that's another story.

I'd probably go along with that myself. The only reason you went into Afghanistan in the first place was after Osama bin Laden, and he fucked off to Pakistan long ago.

Except for the fact that the Taliban controlled the government and sheltered and supported Al-Quaeda.

Even now the Karzai government maintains a hold only on the area around Kabul.  Much of the rest of the country is in Taliban hands.

So what do you think would happen if we withdrew?

The Taliban also control a big chunk of Pakistan and that's where they're sheltering bin Laden now. You did go into Afghanistan after him in the first place. Sorry if you find this fact inconvenient, but it's a true thing. Now that he's buggered off to hide somewhere else, you no longer have any business in Afghanistan.
