Ialdabaoth -> roleplay and Roleplay, or "Dungeon Master" as a double-entendre. (11/17/2009 3:18:35 PM)

I'm currently DMing a 4th Edition D&D group filled 50% with people from my college, and 50% with people from my local TNG group.

Keeping things PG-13 is like herding cats.

uumm..if you're all adults why does it have to be pg-13?? And if everyone is all adults why do you have to be concerned unless one of the groups has no class or tact? If that's the case, maybe reconsider who you invite to hang out together?

Getting geeks to do anything is like herding cats. :-)

Not all of them will be of age. Especially in an era with more widespread homeschooling, you will find entering freshmen as young as 15.

All you can do is give a couple of warnings and then ban them.

I think 4th ed is replacing roleplay with rules, but I'd still love to play!

Actually, I've found the opposite to be true. Especially with the Non-Combat Encounter rules, it's actually ENCOURAGING roleplay at my table. I explained in the beginning that in non-combat encounters, good RP would impart a +1 to +5 DC situational bonus to any skill roll, and everyone's going with it quite handily.

I haven't looked at 4th yet, but I know I felt that way about 3.0, and have been told that 3.5 and 4.0 are even more so.  Especially the source books.  I bought several 3.0 source books, and honestly, it really does seem to try to pigeonhole everything into a rules based niche.

So they're going for unarmed combat rules?  I hope they're better than the original ones, that were a confusing mess.  Kinda like the first psionic rules.

D&D4 has really taken an effort to be as non-confusing as possible. It's led to a much simpler (and somewhat less "deep") game, which in my opinion is a good thing: no more "My half-ogre/half-minotaur took 2 levels in the Bullshittery prestige class, and now he has 11th-level attacks and hit points at level 4!" crap.

2nd ed is responsible for that.  I skipped that bunch of books entirely.  I went from Unearthed Arcana straight to 3rd ed without blinking.  And honestly, my groups have always viewed them more as guidelines than actual rules.  The roleplaying was always more important than whether we were strictly following the weight distribution tables.
