There's a big thread here somewhere with all the subbie gamers. I play EverQuest 2 -- I like the really rich visuals, the 9000+ quests, and the community is great.

I'm a complete gamer geek.  I've never gotten into WoW or EverCrack, because of the monthly fees, but I have lots of friends who do, and I'm a huge fan of The Guild.  I play an online text-based MUD, roleplay required, have dabbled in a few others.  I also play tabletop when I can, but finding a group isn't all that easy anymore.  Console games aren't my favourites, but I have them, and of course computer games.  Fallout, anyone?  I haven't picked up 3 yet, and I"m not sure my computer can handle it, but I still love and play 1 & 2.

Beyond that, I love skiffy books, I'm a Browncoat, and I know almost all the words to Commentary!  The Musical, and several very geeky films.  We won't even discuss my dice collection.  [:)]

Howdy scarletprincess and welcome to the site :)

I'm not a sub but i'm a gamer and online game developer. UO, DAOC, Meridian59, AW and I think I have WoW lying around someplace. Feel free to say hi if you'd like to talk about gaming or meet up in game.

and 9000 quests....? Now I remember why I hate working on the design side of things...remind me to chew out Damion Schubert next time I talk to him for implementing that many quests [:D]

Nice to see another Fallout fan around here. I hated 3 but 1, 2 and Tactics were pretty good. Heh it inspired the game i'm working on right now come to think of it.

Yeah I know I started it. I still get to pimp it. [:D]

But yes, you are not the only one. You are in good company!

Free servers?  You have piqued my geekly interest.  Though after ten years on my current MUD, I'm not sure I could bear to get hooked elsewhere.  Like I said, I still haven't played 3, and I didn't like Tactics, but 1 and 2 are very dear to my heart.  Did you ever play Arcanum?

And please, tell us about this game you're working on  at the moment?

Rhodes85 -> RE: Quite random, But are there any other Subs that are also Gamers? (11/19/2009 12:25:55 AM)

Hmm? You weren't aware of emulated servers? UO has a fully functional emulator out called RunUO which has all the features of the pay servers. and several popular free UO servers have populations of 50,000+  I'm not sure what the name of the software for the WoW and EverQuest emulators are but I know they exist and i'll ask around. I shouldn't have much trouble finding it. Indeed, I loved Fallout 1 and finally managed to get a copy of 2 online earlier this year (it was banned for sale in canada) and finished it in a week [:D] Tactics had potential but it was poorly designed and the AI is a little off. Though i'm actually playing it on another comp while i'm writing this [:D] You have to love the 'once your objectives are complete you will use the brotherhoods superior might and intellect to butcher the remaining savages' quote from General Barnaky eh? Quite amusing. Come to think of it i've never heard of Arcanum, though i've been out of the loop for awhile with most of the newer games.

As for the game i'm working on... its somewhat loosely inspired by Fallout. Basically a post-nuclear war setting, starting out in the western US and expanding with future updates. Its planned out to have about fifty skills ranging from construction based skills like blacksmithing to passive skills like weapons handling. I've got a list in the design doc. Currently planning to implement a custom housing system, where players can gather materials to build the house, combine them into a specific deed and then build the house, or allow for a custom design, similar to what UO has. In addition to housing there will be various vehicles, a guild system, faction system, the possibility of guild-alligned faction wars (currently 5 factions: raiders, mutants, a religious cult, remnants of the US Army and an AI-driven machine based 'skynet' type of faction) I've got a list of info about it if you'd like me to post or cmail you it. Its intended to be full 3d with support for lower end systems and i'm hoping for an alpha test within the next year. The programming is coming along quite well, its just finding art staff thats the most difficult problem. By the way, if anybody knows anyone who can do concept art or 3d modelling could you send me a message?

Llyren -> RE: Quite random, But are there any other Subs that are also Gamers? (11/19/2009 1:11:23 AM)

Arcanum isn't a new game.  It's Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.   I actually acquired it when my ex, who decided that what I really wanted for Christmas was the gameboy that he wanted, returned my Christmas gift, and bought the game for himself.  Turned out I like the game more than he did, so it all worked out in the end.  (Side note, the only good gifts he ever got me were a pair of godzilla slippers that roared when you walked, and the dvd set of  "I, Claudius")

Hmm.. have you read the Demon Download books by Jack Yeovil/Kim Newman?  They create a great post-apocalyptic world, where the difference between the 'haves' and the 'have nots' is extreme.  I think they were re-released a year or so ago, but I have the old ones put out by Warhammer.

Iguana on a stick, anyone?

If you like the AOE series, you might like (gulp) Evony. I know it has a LOT of critics, but for those who like empire construction games that you don't always have to micro manage, you could do worse. And of course, it's free (if you want it to be).

Llyren -> RE: Quite random, But are there any other Subs that are also Gamers? (11/19/2009 3:16:04 AM)

So it's not a real-time game?  That's what I hated about Warcraft.  Trying to build something while the orcs were off where I couldn't see them destroying stuff.

But I do like building games.  I still enjoy Master of Orion 2, and when I can get it to run, Master of Magic, though those are old games.  And of course, all the shopping/farming games on Facebook.

No, it is totally a real time game. Events occur while you are offline - troops can build, resources increase, you can be attacked etc. It doesnt always need to be managed in the sense that there are periods where you have done all the construction you can for that level, queued all your troop production etc, and you can 'set and forget' for a while. As you are most likely in an alliance, others can reinforce you while you are gone.

Llyren -> RE: Quite random, But are there any other Subs that are also Gamers? (11/19/2009 4:44:13 AM)

I may have to investigate this game.  It sounds really interesting.  But I'm having enough trouble using facebook at the moment.  It doesn't seem to like firefox at all.  It might be the fact that I'm piggybacking my sister's wi-fi, or just the computer, but everything runs so slooooow of late.  I'm not sure my system could take a really graphic game.

You may want to try this:

System Specification Check at "Can You Run It?"
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest

It will check your system vs. the minimum and recommended specs for a variety of games. EverQuest 2 is probably one of the most resource-intensive games out there because of the age of its graphics engine and the incredible complexity and beauty of the world being rendered... WOW requires almost nothing in comparison, it's very lightweight in what it needs from your system.

Llyren -> RE: Quite random, But are there any other Subs that are also Gamers? (11/19/2009 11:17:16 AM)

You're going to laugh, but I tried that, and it locked my system to I had to reboot while it was getting ready to check my system.

You didn't SAY it was a TRS-80!!!! [;)]

Evony is sub-browser, no pun intended.

It doesnt suck up a huge amount of graphics, as there is no motion play. Battle results are instantaneous and report-based. So it will play on just about anything.
