ORIGINAL: Vendaval So a lifestyle high in junk food + little to no exercise + lack of a focus on education = 70% of American young people are not fit to enlist in the Armed Services. Now that's a sad state of affairs. "70% Of Young People Unfit to Enlist" Money spent on early-childhood education today can help protect America's national security tomorrow, former military leaders said yesterday at a news conference in Richmond. About 70 percent of the nation's military-age young people cannot enlist in the armed forces because of inadequate education, criminal records or physical problems. "We estimate that only about three out of 10 American youth between the ages of 17 and 24 are fully qualified for military service," said Douglas Smith, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Recruiting Command at Fort Knox, Ky. It's sad commentary that between inadequate education, criminal records and being physically unfit that 70% of Americans 17-24 can not enlist because they don't meet minimum basic requirements. Shocking, right? The Military has created Mission: Readiness, a program aimed at helping young people get healthy and fit for life and the military." http://www.army.com/blog/item/5866 And that to me, is a good thing, for it will enable the US to think about the art of diplomacy instead of bullying countries with troops and expensive armaments. Maybe the US will think twice about being the world's police force, if it does not have the troops to field, and by that, perhaps less interference in world politics, you might actually get a government that serves you for once, instead of the big weapons manufacturers and corporations with a vested interest in war. But of course, the armament companies have seen this, for they are constantly researching the use of drone weapons, stuff that is effective with the minimal of personnel, for they will continue their business regardless of whether a country can field the troops or not. Oh and the inevitable is possible, those big corporations could well become the bed partner of a foreign government, as business is business, and there are no friends in business. The unfit soldier material, is much the same in the UK as well, but maybe we are all heading for the age of keeping our noses out of other countries affairs and getting on with our own lives age. Aneirin, you are correct. Unfortunatly our country is run by big corporations. They're always looking for the "profit" in war. You can tell when the govt is trying to manipulate us to get involved in someone elses' problems, they start using phrases like "peace-keeper". "ethnic cleansing" (whatever the hell THAT means!) "Genocide" etc. We're supposed to, "feel sorry" for those countries or peoples that the big corporations want to use to make money off of! Then, they can start stealing our Taxdollars when the president and congress ahem,......"appropriate" *our money* for those,....."problems." You watch, I bet Obama starts talking about "Darfur" and all the "genocide", "ethnic cleansing" and "peace keepers" and "foreign aid" that "WE" should be doing! And you can bet that the champaign corks will be popping in the lobbyists' offices on K Street in D.C.! Kind of reminds me of that scene in "Goodfellas" when Henry Hill is in the shower and hears about the Lufthansa heist on the radio; "JIMMEEEEEEEEEEEE!" "BARAKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!" "See! He's not such a bad president after all!" "We're gonna make a FUCKING KILLING!!!!" "DRINK UP BOYS!!!" "We're gonna make a lotta money with this guy!" "Now start running that "starving children" footage in all the major markets!" "But Boss, we only have footage of starving children in India not Africa!" "Then run it anyway! The stupid Taxpayers won't know the differance!" "C'mon, hurry up, I want to stop by the Mercedes dealer first before we hit the stripper!"
