I use a weak bleach solution, that being the cheapest bleach I can find, because all it is is bleach, the basic household strength chlorine solution, devoid of enhancers, flavourings and whatnot, for stuff that needs cleaning for health care. I use a household ammonia solution, just basic ammonia and water for degreasing and basic caustic soda for drain cleaning. Simple household chemicals, the cheapest and just as effective as the chemical wonder in the brightly coloured bottle available from the big suppliers. I have a rule, if I can smell the product through the capped bottle, I don't want it, it being that pervasive to gas through it's enclosing material. I also have an allergy to paying more money than is necessary to through down the drain, anything that gets chucked away, I get the cheapest I can find. Others, well vinegar makes a good rust treatment, as does lemon juice. As I experiment with non ferrous metal patination in my home, I try all sorts of kitchen finds, ( onion, chilli, egg, lemon , toothpaste) and have even found using washing soda and about nine volts of electricity, one can remove rust from metal tools, and plate them with new metal. An old laboratory Farnell variable DC power supply I have found to be very useful for my experiments.
