"temporary" I suppose like the Spanish American war 3% phone tax was...

Did you read the actual bill? I have no issue with it. Eventually, we will end up paying this bill anyways. There is an exemption for those with AGI less than 30,000. It seems to tax across the board, including corporations. Unless im missing something hidden within those 6 pages... well... we pay it now or later.

One would think that in a democratic republic that the electorate would simply vote out the war mongers.
Perhps this  is not a democratic republic?
Perhaps the electorate does not actualy have a voice?

Perhaps the bill is already there and it will still have to be paid even if the war ended tonight. No, wait, that isnt a perhaps, its reality.

mnottertail -> RE: New "War" tax pending congress (11/21/2009 2:51:06 PM)

I want to see how many neocons are voting for this the bill should include that which we havent paid for yet in Iraq, and that which we havent paid for yet in Afghanistan, and that which we will pay yet, for the both, and make it a separate line item on the tax on your paycheck,

So, we got spend and borrow republicans
and spend and tax democrats.

It aint like there is any magic money out there that appears based on policy decisions.

There is and never will be a single answer to any of these problems.

thornhappy -> RE: New "War" tax pending congress (11/21/2009 3:24:48 PM)

Nope, but it's foolhardy to go to war without paying up for it.

As for the phone tax...a bit of history: "Although in popular belief the telephone excise tax has been in place continuously since the Spanish-American War, it has actually been repealed and reinstated several times, usually in times of war or economic crisis. Because of this connection to war, the tax has been a frequent target of war tax resisters."

It was partially repealed again in 2006.

That is not acceptable to me.  Not many in congress even pay taxes to the IRS.    I do not buy the "less then x $"  , nor do I buy a "temporary" tax.

This war is not constitutional.   Of course we told the Soviets to get out of there.   Why do I personally want us to be there?   I don't.   The only thing good about sending troops there is that they are not here to violate posse comitatus.

The time to pass a temp tax was in 2001.   How ever many years we have been there - and elsewhere.

Why do we need to be everywhere?   We send decent jobs out of country- capital also flows OUT of here - and we get stuck with the tab.

How many Nannies are there in the current administration, that our beloved head of the Treasury- did not bother to pay?

Why should ANYONE pay?    The TARP=- too-where the money went is a state secret.

FR-I came of political age in the 1970's when people like Ronald Reagan were saying things like "We must pay in taxes for the services we receive."

It seemed like such a commonsense and reasonable idea, that whatever we get, we have to pay for; At the time, by the way, my Marxist college professor was saying - and I do quote- "Deficits don't matter, because we owe them to ourselves."

That sort of voodoo silliness made me a staunch Republican.

Flash forward 30 years, and I have heard none other than Dick Cheney say that "deficits don't matter." The Republicans not only are willing to uncouple spending from taxation, but they are actually hostile to opinions such as "we must pay in taxes for the services we receive" and taking positions that were formerly held only by Marxists.

So today I am a staunch Curmudgeon.

Hell yeah - add a 25% VAT tax at least. By the time the people understand what it is, they'll be used to paying it. Besides, I'm sure there are still some businesses and individuals who are still not convinced to bail and stop producing and they have to be reigned in and understand that entitlements to war, as well as any others the government can think of, supersede any thought of investment or expansion. The economy is running on all cylinder (NOT a typo).

But really, is there still a war going on that the President has within his power the ability to end it?

I thought it was declared over sometime in January. Aren't the prisoners released? Haven't we a clear path and date to leave Iraq? I imagine that Afghanistan escalation campaign promise has worked well and we're on our way to converting Afghanistan into a free democratic ally in the region now that the philosophy of chatting with our adversaries is stated as Administration policy. War, death of military and innocent civilians isn't occurring. US occupation and subsequent US resentment is decreasing. I've heard some rumbling, I think there was a big strategy summit with a general on the way to advocate the important issue of the Chicago Olympics, about a decision being made on Afghanistan, but like most important issues facing this Administration - there hasn't been enough time to form, or implement, a plan.

I have to imagine because all the forum chat about the war and escalation has taken a backseat to such critical issues as an authors book tour.

Yup - The best thing to do is to remain calm - ALL IS WELL!!

There is so much BS about this war, I'm not sure anyone will ever know the truth.  I do know flip-floppers when I see them
though.

Last year any talk of setting a pull-out date was blasted by the GOP and it's supporters calling everyone traitors and saying they where aiding the terrorist, and the same was true for any person who did not support any money Bush requested for the war he started.

Now these same people, are screaming when are we pulling out, every GOP Senator voted no in march for war funding, what changed???  Beside the party of NO no longer being in charge

I am so tired of the party line with the GOP and the Dems, but until the people who support them start to change their votes nothing will change.

Mercnbeth -> RE: New "War" tax pending congress (11/23/2009 3:17:46 PM)

Couldn't agree more! Where are all those who were protesting and calling for the end of international intervention? A change in the napkin color at the White House seems to have wiped away any protest.

Meanwhile the Administration sits on the fence regarding his pre-election commitment to enhancing the level of troops in Afghanistan while more soldiers and civilians die due to the lack of leadership and direction coming out of the White House.

Yet there is nothing being reported about it at the beginning of any newscast I've seen, nor is anyone seemingly concerned about it now on CM.

Got to ferret out these hypocrites don't you think housesub?
