angelic -> my best friend (3/12/2006 4:02:59 PM)

has recently been 'busted' for being o/l and in 'unacceptable' forums (to the vanilla world) while at work. i am sure Mmany here post during the day 'while at work'... if Yyou have permission from Yyour employer... GREAT... if Yyou do not... Big Brother might be watching...

This one hit too close to home (i.e. my best friend)... who is a wonderful person, with the biggest heart i have ever known...

Just a friendly warning... it can and DOES happen.

ownedgirlie -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 4:51:55 PM)

It is best to become friendly with your IT people if that is the case. i have had an entire IM conversation handed to me (by a former boss), much to my embarrassment. That was yearrrrssss ago.

Most companies won't log keystrokes (too much work and reporting for them) but they can run reports on exactly where you've been. With where i work, for example if i go to a Yahoo chat room, each "screen refresh," and each post, shows as a yahoo hit. Our network manager has a Websense program up and running at all times and can glance at his screen to see oh...so & so has 300 yahoo hits. He just assumes it is IM, and the IM usage at our work is quite low.

However, i was on this board while lunching at my desk. He called and asked, "Hey...what are you doing on the internet?" "What do you mean?" i say. He says "You're name is being hit with the legal liability category like mad....it says you're on....Collar Me?"

So, even if a site is not blocked by employer filters, it can hit warning triggers in your IT department. i laughed, soooo embarrassed (oh my oh my), told him someone sent me a link and i brought it up and forgot about it. He believed it and that was that.

Now i just unplug from the network and use my edge card if i want to peek in here while lunching ;)

A few years ago a bunch of WA State gov. employees were fired for writing explicit emails and looking at porn while at work.[:o]

angelic -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 5:03:08 PM)

it is happening all the time... and yes proudsub i remember that...

the fact remains... if on the internet... IT IS BEING SEEN

siamsa24 -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 5:30:23 PM)

Maybe it's just where I work, but I don't have the time to be logged onto these sites at work because I'm too busy working
I know that some places are a little more relaxed about that, but honestly, you get paid to work, not to spend time surfing the net......
But, as usual, that's just my opinion

ownedgirlie -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 5:35:36 PM)

When i'm there 12 hours a day, i do take mental health breaks from time to time. That might mean spending time doing non-work related things to refresh my mind.

angelic -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 5:39:04 PM)

don't misunderstand this thread... i am not judging Aanyone... it is most certainly not my place... All i am saying is that regardless of what kind of employee Yyou may be... if Yyou are on Yyour employer's property... at some point... unless the Employer has said it is ok, You will get busted...

siamsa24 -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 5:46:27 PM)

I am only saying that when I am at work (yes, often for 12 and 14 hours a day) that there is not time for such things. The whole reason that I am there is because I have stuff that needs to be done. I do take short breaks, but generally they are spent running to the little girl's room or to the microwave to nuke a tea. I am getting the idea that my job is unusual in the fact that I am working whenever I am at work (this isn't just this thread, I have been realizing it for years now), or maybe I'm just unusual.

I do think that the point of the thread is a decent one though, someone may be watching.....

ownedgirlie -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 5:50:47 PM)

Goodness, what the heck do you do for 14 hours straight where you only break away to get tea or go to the bathroom? If i didn't have hallway conversations or periodic mind diversions i would be burned out, as would anyone i have ever worked with.

siamsa24 -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 5:56:09 PM)

I work several jobs, my longest day is in retail, but I work long days at the Humane Society and the restaurant too. Anything in the customer service industry is going to be like that.
I have an office, but I am in it a grand total of about three hours every day.
And anyone who has worked retail or restaurants (or even tried to do both at the same time) will tell you that if you are scheduled for a 12 or 14 hour day then you are going to be working
(and working hard) that whole time.

I think I need to work in an office, sounds cushy........

ownedgirlie -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 6:00:55 PM)

i did that long ago - had 3 jobs at once in restaurant and retail. Took a lot of energy, so i kjnow what you're going through. i sometimes wish i could go back to it (not the 3 jobs at once part). Good luck to you!

siamsa24 -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 6:04:23 PM)

Thanks, you are one of the few who understands. Even my boss doesn't understand why I break dress code. At the store I am expected to wear pumps. PUMPS!!!! I couldn't believe it. I wear sneakers thankyouverymuch [:D]

ownedgirlie -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 6:13:45 PM)

LOL dress code. we all break ours too. In 105 degree summers, there is no way in hell we are wearing nylons with close toed shoes. Nothing wrong with tan bare legs and cute pedicured toes :)

siamsa24 -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 6:17:08 PM)

I am 6 feet tall so in the summer I just buy normal length dress pants and tah-dah, capris!
And if anyone asks about them all I have to say is that they are just too short [:D]

angelic -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 6:20:21 PM)

sorry for interjecting here.. but is it possible to stay on the thread?

siamsa... that's wonderful that you aren't in an office... Mmany here are

angelic -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 6:26:04 PM)

wow is all i can say... steps back and starts to re-think a lot of this

ownedgirlie -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 6:27:42 PM)

Anyway.....back to the topic (sorry for totally diverting it, angelic), yes this is a very real issue that people should be aware of. Even if a site is not blocked, anything you do online at work can be tracked. It is important to know that.

slavejali -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 6:32:09 PM)

I have 4 girls working for me here. The only ban I have enforced is no internet chat, its too time consuming! As far as the web is concerned they can look at whatever they want, if they participated in forums that would be ok too. I don't police what they look at, its none of my business.

angelic -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 6:36:06 PM)

thank you slavejali...

siamsa24 -> RE: my best friend (3/12/2006 6:39:38 PM)

I'm just going to say one more little thing that is slightly off-topic, but not really.
If you are paying these girls to work for you then why are they surfing the internet at all? I just don't understand that part. I mean, sheesh, if I got paid for all the internet surfing that I do then I would be a very wealthy girl. Do they have so little to do that they have time to play around? Can I work for you?

Now I promise to butt-out. Really.
