Every so often a poster comes along who seems to get under everyone's skin. It may be their attitude, it may be the content of their posts but the general feeling is that people wish they would (in polite terms) just go away. So, I am wondering if that is the case, why do people actually take precious time out of their lives and respond to said person? Even if the responders only complain or snark, "you" are still feeding into that particular poster's need for attention. So why not simply starve that need instead. I am very confuzzled about this: why some very bright people would choose to honor someone's ability to provoke them.

It's also a case where the need is to express the utter contempt for the that specific person who feels a need to be an out and out jackass. As an observation, that is no different then a long time regular poster making a post where they admit to being less than 100% responsible and they are then blasted for having the fortitude to admit to some irresponsibility and had politely asked for advice. Human nature is sometimes plain and simple and other times it is too bloody complicated to understand and figure out.

It's fun to play with dumb people. It can be as simple as finding amusement from their reactions.

Personally, the poster in question (and we all know who he is, bless hims wee heart) has begun to bore and be beneath Me (which is where he belongs anyway), so I'm wiping him off My shoes, and going to make a bowl of cereal and watch Robot Chicken, which is a far better use of My time.

Maybe people just want to get rid of whatever is 'under their skin'. If I have time or could be bothered to respond I do. If not, I don't. I'm yet to be convinced that ignoring them does anything either - there is always another idiot to take their place. They will get attention somehow - why not slap em in the face in the meantime. Sometimes it also just feels good to get the better of someone. Maybe it's cruel, but it's also natural.

I tend to ignore said posters. Occasionally I engage, but usually one time and leave it at that, not caring to check back on responses.

I usually ignore trollish threads, though sometimes my inner imp gets the better of me.

Why do people comment on every little thing? Why do they comment without reading the thread? Why do people come here at all for mindless banter with strangers? Several reasons, of course. Humans are social creatures. Escape from daily life. Expressions of ego. Need for control (in the broader sense--which includes just about every "submissive" and "slave" on the planet, along with "masters"). We could then step back and ask why we're bothered that people don't just ignore those posters? Why don't we just ignore the people not ignoring the offending posts and read something else? Human nature wants the world to work the way we think it should. It doesn't, and it frustrates us. Getting over that is a large part of mastery--of anything. My two cents. Tim

Usually it's because I'm bored and need some kind of amusement, not because I feel provoked. I don't think anyone in their right mind takes him seriously. Most of the time I read his posts and think, meh, whatever. Even if all the regular posters ignored him, there will always be someone else who comes along and responds to him. (Edited for typo)

I believe it is ego. People have a hard time not involving themselves in what they perceive, if it is something that is interpreted as a threat, they attack. Just a theory… Kim

I agree with you nc, it's a fun passtime when there is nothing else to do, otherwise I just ignore him. I might respond to someone else's comment but that's about all.

I engage trolls sometimes because it can be entertaining but after awhile it gets boring and with a specific person he was only the 3rd person in like 3 yrs of being on CM that I have blocked on the forums.

I'm practicing concentrating my snark, until the day the snark-wave gets so powerful, that the person on the other side of the pc will keel over.

Sadly sometimes the beam of snark has missed it's mark. I've accidently been hit......or at least I assume that's why I keel over.....thinks.....maybe not [:D]
