Sounds like a health problem. And why are so many young people like that so overweight? You can't do a proper "Panty Raid" if your big fat ass gets stuck in the window now can you?

LOL! Good point. Personally I don't care either way. I'm not overweight and i'm not in the US so it doesn't affect me. I'm just thinking they're going to get sued. Perhaps they should stop selling pizza, burgers and other fatty foods on campus.

How is it even an "offense"? It's a course requirement at a traditionally black college. How is it different than, say, a foreign language requirement no one wants to take? Inadvisable, perhaps. But hardly grounds for a lawsuit, as long as they allow for the disabled.

Interesting that this seems to be a problem. At the college and at the university I attended, a certain number of credit hours were required in the health/fitness area for your 4-year degree. I am not sure about the 2-year degrees. Although I think that the other test with the calipers would be more accurate.

I feel the same way. They have shown they aren't proficient in that subject so they are required to take a class on it. Its one extra class, no big deal. It might add to their college experience and broaden their horizons. At my college you had to take a test to prove you were computer literate. If you got under 70% on the test you had to take a class that otherwise wasn't required. It was called "fluency in technology." A lot of students who had to take it bitched about it. I see it as the same type of thing.

The difference is its a requirement if the school determines you are overweight or not fit. Its not a requirement for everyone, only for those who have a high BMI, which can be misleading. I can see a suit brewing over this.

That itself is discrimination based on body type and the basis for legal action. Not to mention that the BMI is a ridiculous index to begin with. Muscle weighs more than fat and the BMI does nothing to account for that difference, so you can have someone with very little body fat classified as obese under BMI standards.

hmmm...when I was in college we had to take some kind of physical education any way, I know cause I remember failing out my freshman year for basically not showing up (well class was at 8am for goodness sake..lol). And honestly, not sure how they are gaining weight...hell as I recall basically all we could afford was mac and cheese and noodles, so we weren't gaining anything...lol Sometimes we did have money, but CD's, musical instruments, and concert tickets couldn't buy themselves...lol

It will be shot down. Let it take it's time as the lawyers grasp for our tax dollars but it will be shot down. I got three letters to prove it right here : ADA That stands for a the American with Disabilities Act. There has to be at least one working brain among all those suits hanging out at the public through. (sp, meant troff) If needed I could litigate this asshole shit with my eyes closed. I can pick up enough case law in ten minutes to bury them in discovery even. Idiots. T

What does public trough have to do with it? Am I missing the meaning of that phrase? Its a private school if I am not mistaken. Thinking about it now though, just because someone is thin doesn't mean they are healthy and just because they are over weight doesn't mean they aren't. Everyone should have to take the PE class or no one. Ya'll are right. I was wrong

It's a requirement "only" for overweight people, that's why it isn't "cool". If they required all students to take the course there would be no issue. It's repugnant. Being fat doesn't equal uninformed about health issues. It may mean they don't care, it could mean bad genes. Skinny doesn't equate to being a health guru. The disgusting part is they are changing the graduating requirements based on physical appearance. I can't believe people don't get that.

T Term, I wasn't aware that being "overweight" was a "disability" like oh, polio, or being blind or something like that. I thought it was just from eating too much food and not burning it off with enough excercise. That's just "bad habits" not a disability!

Last I saw high BMI people were not a protected class. Stupid requirement, but not illegally discrminatory.

If they had started the policy with the incoming students, giving them a chance to decide if they want to attend there knowing the requirement, then i would say... ok... they knew. But to impose it upon those graduating this year... its a bit much, a bit pushy. Should be interesting to see what happens.
