Brain -> As Wall Street Posts Record Profits and US Hunger Rate Grows Where Is the Community Organizer We Ele (11/22/2009 6:56:16 PM)

Maybe he just doesn’t give a shit? Since he doesn’t want to make changes and is keeping the same Wall Street financial people running the show instead of real change, maybe it’s time to get rid of him. I don’t care if he is a black elected president, I have no problem nominating somebody else to lead the party who wants real change. If Joe Lieberman, Blanche Lincoln, Ben Nelson, or anyone else blocks healthcare reform with a strong public option and they don’t get nailed to cross for it then Obama needs to move on. Most people would agree the Republicans will not have a strong leader running for president anyway.

As Wall Street Posts Record Profits and US Hunger Rate Grows, Robert Scheer Asks:"Where Is the Community Organizer We Elected?"

A pair of new government reports released this week paint a startling picture more than a year after the economic meltdown. On Tuesday, the New York Comptroller Office said Wall Street profits are set to exceed the record set three years ago. The four largest firms took in $22.5 billion in profits through September. Meanwhile, far more people are going hungry in the United States than previously thought. The Department of Agriculture estimates 50 million Americans, including a quarter of all children, struggled to get enough to eat last year. We speak to veteran journalist Robert Scheer. Brain, its taken 60 odd years to get a health care reform bill up, how long do you think its gonna take to do something about poverty. not in my lifetime no matter who is in power...its the same in the UK and Canada, there are growing portions of the population that are invisible to the majority, denied, dismissed and derided.

What exactly do people want done about Wall Street profits? You don't want the people to work there to make so much? Great, pay them less. How does that impact the hunger rate? It does leave more money for the shareholders of the Wall Street firms with record profits? How does that help the hungry? Or you could control pricing and they could charge lower advisory fees to hedge funds, and Wall Street firms will make less and hedge funds will make more. How does that help the situation?

While I understand the widespread anger at the apparent indifference of some/many of the Wall St types, I hear people being upset but rarely see anything approaching a proposal

So whats the Democratic party's solution. Make everyone equal by whatever means necessary?

The Trees

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'Oppression!'
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw

Perhaps the Left would be happier if Wall Street were also moved over to China, along with all the heavy industry they're driving away.

What in the world is wrong with making money ? That is the thing that made America the envy of the world.

I disagree.

The thing that made America the economic engine that was the envy of the world was the way in which the economy linked performance to pay/  So if someone produced, and generated good for the country by providing a product or service in demand, that person made money.  Well and good.

Wall Street has fucked up royally.  As in a $700 billion dollar bailout.  They did NOT produce, and threatened to drag down the global economy is they weren't rescued.  Not to mention that there were a lot of shell games going on that drove a real estate bubble.

Under those circumstances, giving out big bonuses cannot be justified.

Summing up:

Reward for good performance = good
Reward for horrible performance = bad

So what's the republican party's solution? Cut corporate taxes and hope they'll show the same concern for their country, their workers and the people who are hungry as they always have in the past?

I am so totally sick of this. They keep making more and more money, so now they are only paying a 1% tax rate and that is supposedly on $2.3 billion? Are you kidding me! People need to know this.

I hope when people find out about this Warren Buffett gets investigated because I don’t think anybody is that good! All that stock in Goldman Sax he bought, no way. It sounds too much like Bernie Madoff to me, way too fishy, it smells. Warren has got to be doing some insider trading and paying somebody off.

So what is the Republican plan for the economy again? More and more tax cuts! You can’t be serious. Obama better do something about this, that’s all I can say.

Goldman Sachs’s Tax Rate Drops to 1%, or $14 Million (Update1)

Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which got $10 billion and debt guarantees from the U.S. government in October, expects to pay $14 million in taxes worldwide for 2008 compared with $6 billion in 2007.

The company’s effective income tax rate dropped to 1 percent from 34.1 percent, New York-based Goldman Sachs said today in a statement. The firm reported a $2.3 billion profit for the year after paying $10.9 billion in employee compensation and benefits.

Brain, I don't think anyone running for the office is a "leader."
They're "politicians" plain and simple.
I'd like to see a good "manager" running for Prez. Lawyers are lawyers, they just don't seem to work out as managers.
You don't hire a "carpenter" to unclog your pipes.

Musicmystery -> RE: As Wall Street Posts Record Profits and US Hunger Rate Grows Where Is the Community Organizer We (11/22/2009 8:45:42 PM)

Don't companies need higher earnings before they hire more workers?

Brain -> RE: As Wall Street Posts Record Profits and US Hunger Rate Grows Where Is the Community Organizer We Ele (11/22/2009 8:53:49 PM)

My proposal is not sophisticated, it’s very simple: People and companies that make a lot of money should pay more taxes. So in the future vote for someone who will make everyone pay their fair share, and then if you do better you pay more.

So, earlier in the thread you made a comment agreeing with the article but now you are saying the opposite.

Or is just anything that opposes Obama or Democrats that you will agree with, regardless if you contradict yourself in almost the same breath?

Brain -> RE: As Wall Street Posts Record Profits and US Hunger Rate Grows Where Is the Community Organizer We (11/22/2009 8:59:15 PM)

No, they're already making record profits and have piles of cash.

Musicmystery -> RE: As Wall Street Posts Record Profits and US Hunger Rate Grows Where Is the Community Organizer We (11/22/2009 9:00:16 PM)

On which they pay taxes, and at progressive rates.

I agree with you, but not for the same reasons.

I think a big part of the problem is we have anointed these people as "leaders" when they should be our representatives.
