San Francisco 1905: Archive Video Footage

Cool video footage. It's interesting to observe the  people on the street who go out of their way to observe the camera man in this footage. At the time, video was a very new technology, but nowadays most people wouldn't give it a second thought if they saw a guy with a camera.

This was interesting for many reasons.

1. The clothing of both genders and the children.
2. So many things about the cars were of interest to me
3. What seemed to be a total lack of any traffic control
that they could only get away with because everything
was moving at walking speed or a little above it.
4. The camera was no doubt a large box with a big lens
sitting on a tripod on a railcar of some type.
5. If the camera was a hand crank type then somebody
had a very steady hand and great sense of rhythm.

Those are the most obvious things to me from my first viewing.
It will be interesting to see what others notice.

Thanks for posting this

I'm surprised at how many motorized cars there already were on the street in 1905--there seemed to be many more of them than the horse-drawn.

Also, I wonder what this area looked like the next year--after the earthquake--and if all those stores and buildings survived.

the film seemed to repeat - or go down the same block.   It looked very disorganized.   That also would be before the big earthquake and fire.
