Brain -> US builds up its bases in oil-rich South America (11/28/2009 10:41:03 PM)

People are getting sick and tired of this krud. Like who wants war? This build up will only continue the loss of US influence.

US builds up its bases in oil-rich South America

From the Caribbean to Brazil, political opposition to US plans for 'full-spectrum operations' is escalating rapidly

The United States is massively building up its potential for nuclear and non-nuclear strikes in Latin America and the Caribbean by acquiring unprecedented freedom of action in seven new military, naval and air bases in Colombia. The development – and the reaction of Latin American leaders to it – is further exacerbating America's already fractured relationship with much of the continent.

The new US push is part of an effort to counter the loss of influence it has suffered recently at the hands of a new generation of Latin American leaders no longer willing to accept Washington's political and economic tutelage. President Rafael Correa, for instance, has refused to prolong the US armed presence in Ecuador, and US forces have to quit their base at the port of Manta by the end of next month.

Is this the best you can do ? An article written by a known marxist is hardly likely to show the US in a favourable light is it ?

I guess thats the definition of a "rhetorical question"

He can't possibly be a Marxist, though: he's a long way to the left of the unelected Kenyan immigrant communist dictator Obama. He must be a Kropotkinite or an anarcho syndicalist or something.

Someone might ask, why America should be building any bases at all in Colombia. What part of Colombia threatens America, that we need to defend ourselves by establishing a military base there?

Suppose Venezuela decided it needed to protect its interests by building amilitary base in Omaha, or a submarine base in Houston.

mnottertail -> RE: US builds up its bases in oil-rich South America (11/29/2009 11:56:51 AM)

this is us going to the alamo. there is a crack in the cataclisym that fuckheads are going to simplify into an east meets west war. instead of we are all here together war.

Seeing as Brazil now has more oil reserves than the middle east why do we need bases there?
Won't we simply be "buying" their oil now? Their recent finds are absolutely enourmous! Sorry "peak-oilers" but your theory has been backed up by another 200 years.
And as for Colombia and Mexico we should'nt be doing any business with them in the first place because of DRUGS!
No embasseys, no airline service, no shipping, no telecomminications, no postal services, no nothing!
When is that "war on drugs" going to start? You know, the one that politicians keep telling us about. Anyone know? They can start it at anytime now!

mnottertail -> RE: US builds up its bases in oil-rich South America (11/29/2009 12:23:48 PM)

why a war on drugs, what's wrong with them? and I guess the alamo is that if the largest reserves are in the western hemisphere, we should camp out on them while it doesnt take a war to do it....it's called planning, something we should do more of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess you could say the cocaine manufacturing part. Given the US could strike just about anywhere in Latin America with impunity, the bases argument is a moot point.

I really don't know anything about the author but in my opinion considering he comes from Ireland or has that Irish name I think it's unlikely he's a Marxist. Ireland, to the best of my knowledge, is a pretty right wing country right now and I think it's unlikely they have very many Marxists.

Good point!
Given the way the drug trade has ravaged Central America, one could make the argument that Mexico, in a preemptive strike against the destabilizing forces of drug purchasers, should start bombing and strafing Houston and San Diego.

One would hope that you have alerted the press.

"Another letter from the right leaning conspiracy nut? What's he on about this time?"

Silence8 -> RE: US builds up its bases in oil-rich South America (11/30/2009 3:49:55 PM)

The Honduras coup is essentially US-backed. Think Chiquita and Dole, one of which I believe is derived from United Foods, responsible for the Guatemalan coup in the mid-50s.

Moonhead -> RE: US builds up its bases in oil-rich South America (11/30/2009 3:55:35 PM)

United Foods are still going? I thought they'd ceased to be a while back.

Silence8 -> RE: US builds up its bases in oil-rich South America (11/30/2009 4:15:02 PM)

Woops. I meant United Fruit, which, I just checked, is now Chiquita. They were directly involved in the Guatemala coup.
