This topic will be perpetual somewhere in the Politics and Religion forum, but I'd like to get a bigger sampling of thought.

How do you feel about the pending troop increases to Afghanistan?

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Please give a moment - Afghanistan Poll (11/29/2009 11:06:39 AM)

There really wasn't an option that goes with how I really feel. I think that the US should be leaving BUT that it needs to be done over time. From what I've heard from people who have served, to just pick up and leave would be suicidal.

TheHeretic -> RE: Please give a moment - Afghanistan Poll (11/29/2009 11:17:04 AM)

You're right Zephyr.  I've added an option that was clearly missing.

I won't be adding "nuke'em til they glow - shoot them in the dark," though.

LadyPact -> RE: Please give a moment - Afghanistan Poll (11/29/2009 11:23:02 AM)

I want to see the exit strategy.  Please keep in mind that I feel I am biased due to personal interests.  If we send more now, it's possible that everyone will get home sooner.  That's My primary hope.

One more thing, I'd like to see the news item that prompted this poll....just out of curiousity.  Thanks for the added option, pity I had already voted I like that one better.

Hey Rich. I picked "sending more", but I also want to see the exit strategy. I'd be lighting a fire under somebody's ass if I were Obama.

TheHeretic -> RE: Please give a moment - Afghanistan Poll (11/29/2009 11:57:59 AM)

I'm going to be a very tough sell on Tuesday, Level.

Level -> RE: Please give a moment - Afghanistan Poll (11/29/2009 12:03:50 PM)

Understood, my friend. What I'm seeing is, we're already there, but we don't have the numbers to do what we want, be done with it, and get the hell out. Get the number of troops needed, get aggressive, and get our folks home.

TheHeretic -> RE: Please give a moment - Afghanistan Poll (11/29/2009 12:13:48 PM)

I'm hoping there will be a good thread after President Obama's address at West Point.  Afghanistan isn't a place where goals get met ... unless you're a native, fighting the invaders.

US should learn to mind their own business.

History supports your comment on goals, Rich, but I hope we can, to an acceptable degree, be the first to change that. But no, it'll never be some Westernized wonderland, but if we can cripple the Taliban, and enable Karzai to function within reason, it might not be a "win", but "win-ish" [:D]

I was all set to disagree with your initial post, Level. Then I saw this and I have to say I agree with you PROVIDED that the reason more troops will/would be sent would be for that reason and not just to keep things going.

Kinky!

mnottertail -> RE: Please give a moment - Afghanistan Poll (11/29/2009 12:28:09 PM)

I voted my kufuchisuika (you understand this Rich) and said immediate exit, cause we aint got the guts to level the fucking toilet, or dig the hole.

But what we really aught to do, is apologize to the Russians, and help them any way they need and let the Chinese do their diplomacy, it is those guys backyard after all.

Thanks for the link Rich (if I may call you that). I've thought about this and want to withdraw my initial vote. I prefer to be cautious and wait until I hear what Obama has to say on Tuesday then come back and vote again.

Exactly. That's all we're doing now, fumble-fucking around, barely maintaining a status quo (and not even that, really). Get it done, or get out.

I know! [:D]

You aren't alone in your opinion, by the way; I don't agree that it isn't our business to be there right now, but I understand why folks don't want to be there.

I'm not entirely convinced that there was enough planning in the first place. From what I've seen, admittedly not a whole lot, the whole thing seems to have been a disaster from the start. It seems to me that I remember reading about troops camping in a valley, leaving themselves open for a massacre, which just made me shake my head.

My instinct is to say "Get out now!" but I do have enough sense to know that it would be a disaster if they were to do that.
