President O'bama is going to make a speech defining something...not sure what, are the troops worth it, does he have a plan

So before the speech, what are your thoughts??

ME:   I am looking for a reason for the troops, and something more defined then what we have heard in the last 8 years.  I mean the same people (party) screaming "cut and run" now demand a end date. though for 4 years they fought the concept of more war,and what will he say about health insurance, cause God knows he sold out the people who put him in office

I expect him to say a lot of nothing as usual.

Who are the "people that put him in office" and how has he "sold them out" iyo?

I am just going to quote Sullivan:
"If he ramps up Afghanistan and delays Iraq withdrawal, he will lose his base. If he does the full metal neocon as he is being urged to, he should not be deluded in believing the GOP will in any way support him. They will oppose him every step of every initiative. They will call him incompetent if Afghanistan deteriorates, they will call him a terrorist-lover if he withdraws, they will call him a traitor if he does not do everything they want, and they will eventually turn on him and demand withdrawal, just as they did in the Balkans with Clinton. Obama's middle way, I fear, is deeper and deeper into a trap, and the abandonment of a historic opportunity to get out."

I would love for Afghanistan to turn into a civil decent society, where we can leave and they remain peaceful.

I just have a very bad feeling about it.

I agree with the previous post: the most likely there will be nothing new in Obama coming announcement. Although, I do not know what realistically should be done. It is always much easier to start a war than to end it. Russians hanged out there over 10 years and killed over a million Afgans. If I was in Obama shoes, I would start making preparations for pulling the troops out.  The civil war that will follow does not pose major regional threat and it can be contained.

I expected nothing, this much time has gone by and so far I got pretty much what I expected.

Want my vote for President ? Get up there and say it straight out "Vote for me. It really doesn't change anything no matter who is President. We will continue to do what we have been doing regardless of whether it is good for us or not. I just want the job to make my friends rich and maybe stir up a few issues for the sheeple".

SAY THAT, and you got my vote.

I'll certainly be listening, but not as an empty vessel, waiting to be filled by soaring rhetoric.  Afghanistan is a perpetual mess, and it isn't one we are obligated to fix.  He isn't going to change my mind about that.  He might be able to sell me on some patience.

I think we should get out of there, Iraq, S. Korea, Japan and Germany.

I dont think that what comes steaming out of cows has anything to do with ghosts.

Although a ghost would probably scare the shit outta me...

I'll listen....and I like to beleive my mind is always open[8|]

Lucylastic -> RE: Will you listen, then judge or is your mind made up? (12/1/2009 5:07:06 PM)

WRT the topic.
With  allies being a huge part in Afghanistan Im listening, the plan needs to be involve everyone , otherwise you are just cutting off your nose to spite your face. To act alone would be dumb. Altho Im sure the Pres is aware of that even tho many of his countrymen arent.

servantforuse -> RE: Will you listen, then judge or is your mind made up? (12/1/2009 5:48:30 PM)

I listened to the speech tonight but wasn't impressed. He started out by saying how important it is to win the war in Afganistan, but then set a timetable to leave there in 18 months.

Perhaps you didn't listen well enough....he redefined the wars aim....he announced a narrowing of the goals...and laid out a path to get there.Part of that path being the necessitty of setting a timetable....as he said to the Afghan people  America seeks to be a partner with a free and secure Afghanistan.....not it's patron.Leaving our commitment to be open ended sets us up as a patron for an indefinite period.....as your country collapses around your ears, does that sound like a good idea to you?

Brain -> RE: Will you listen, then judge or is your mind made up? (12/1/2009 6:30:16 PM)

Progressives elected him and he promised change. I'm not convinced health-care reform will be adequate without a strong public option. He already sold out to the pharmaceutical companies and Sen. Billy Tauzen. So far, I don't see much difference between him and George Bush. Sure he talks a good talk but substantively he leaves much to be desired.

I don't care if he is a black president he hasn't done anything for me to justify his supporting his nomination to lead the Democratic Party into the next election. I would prefer to support Robert Kennedy Junior. The video is called the truth about the Bush presidency but it applies regardless which party is in office. Especially since it appears the Democrats are more in bed with Wall Street than the Republicans.

I did like what he said about Barry Goldwater!

I'm not interested in supporting a corrupt Afghan government. If Republicans don't want to pay for healthcare than I don't want to spend another dime on these two wars; Iraq and Afghanistan

I stopped listening to the President's speeches some time ago. I'll probably read the transcript tomorrow.

At this point, I could care less about the rhetoric. You can say whatever you want. You can promise to end crime, end world hunger, end poverty, achieve world peace, cure cancer ... whatever. At some point the rubber hits the road and you either to put up or shut up. Until I start to see some significant actions that produce results I don't care what anyone says.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Will you listen, then judge or is your mind made up? (12/1/2009 6:40:26 PM)

Mission accomplished.

Democrats are split. He says nothing tonight he couldnt have done or said months ago, making him look weak to the indies. He waffles on a strategy and announces withdrawal. He will withdraw in defeat, and hopefully without the loss of too many lives.

TheHeretic -> RE: Will you listen, then judge or is your mind made up? (12/1/2009 6:40:29 PM)

Why the hell would he take that speech to West Point???  Who made such an awful decision???  The strategy he outlined in a measured, rational way was about the best I could hope for, but as far as selling it, a complete failure.

President Obama would have done much better giving this address from the Oval Office.  No audience would have been better than that audience.  Worst Obama speech EVER!
