I am in pain due to a tooth having an abess and the dentist wants it removed before treating the tooth that needs the filling. Painkillers are so fun to have. Waiting for the doctor to get his butt in gear is not.

Your best bet is to discuss the options with your dentist and see what he/she recommends.

Any good dentist will get rid of the infection first.....if it gets into your blood stream, which it will because pulling the tooth or any drilling will allow it to do so.....you will have some serious medical complications. I had the same thing happen....he wanted to do a root canal to save the tooth, I wanted the damn thing out....but he doesn't make any money that way.....personally, if you can get it pulled, I'd do that once the infections go away

A general principle is to hang onto as many teeth as possible; jawbone tends to degrade in the absence of teeth. Being toothless does have a certain romantic tinge for the fetishy felatio-ists, but its reality is a little more grim. Anorexia from inability to eat anything solid reads way more cool than it lives . ... . & dental implants are expensive, & etc . . . . .

Get rid of the infection then get the root canal and then a cap put on the tooth. If you get it pulled after awhile the teeth will begin to shift, also you have that sexy open space there. If you have a good dentist a root canal is not bothersome at all. Good luck, ~Lashra

Antibiotics now. Do take as directed. Then root canal, then crown. Always seek to save teeth.

I have an appt. with the oral surgeon on the 14th. I am taking T3 for the pain, but I have bottles of advil onhand. The regular dentist has me on antibiotics to get rid of the abcess. I lost 2 of my molars a couple of years ago because they got broken. the extraction is for the 11th of January. Its the drill that scares me more..LOL! has Steve Martin singing from "Little Shop of Horrors" in her head

I'm absolutely terrified of dentists and any dental work.......I'd rather have a tooth pulled and get the hell out of there than go thru the anguish of having the work done. I have one that's broken, another that half the crown work has been done on...that's the one that I want pulled, it's already abcessed once, I just never went back after the pain went away. I still have 3 of my 4 wisdom teeth, had one pulled cuz it broke. It doesn't help that the out of pocket costs for a root canal and crown is over $400, which at the time I didn't have. I got dental insurance to get my teeth taken care of, but it's going to be a serious issue for me to get to the dentist to get the work I need done. The fear is actually debilitating.......

I freakin' hate dental work. I found nitrous very helpful, so if you can, you might see if your dentist will administer nitrous as part of the process. Alternately, dentists will sometimes also prescribe anti-anxiety meds to be taken in conjunction with the dental work . . . . With nitrous I didn't even notice the dreaded needle going into my mouth, that part is probably the most wince-worthy . . . . Oh, & a personal stereo (mp3 player or whatlike) & headphones can help block out the sound of the drill . . . . .

A few years ago a lad and a lass here in Manchester took some mind bending drug...GBH or something or other....and the lass got it into her head that a fly was stuck in her throat so the lad ripped all her teeth out with pliers to solve the problem.......I suppose when you're off your nut cause and effect gets lost in the small details. Take some GBH mate....you won't regret it.

I'm urging you...get a root canal, to save the tooth. I had to have a lot of heavy dental work done a few years ago, including root canals. It was tedious but not awful, once I finally got the work done. Before the work, it was awful, but getting it done was a great relief. I used to have a terrible time getting properly numbed, but these days I find they have much better anesthetics and better techniques of administering them. By the way, taking care of the infection before you get work done is not only safer, but also makes it more certain you'll be completely numbed. In the past, the main problem I had with bad experiences was that they didn't believe me when I said I wasn't completely numb, and I would be the one to find out the hard way that I was right. So, I make sure now that anyone who works on me knows these things, and that we have an understanding, before they start working on me. Even if they don't think it's possible that I'm not numb, they take my word for it, stop if I signal and numb me further, before continuing. Sometimes, they try to test me, to prove I'm mistaken, they're so certain I'm just scared and couldn't possibly still have sensation, but they always find out that it's true. My body has a wondrous nervous system. Anyway, I got root canal work done with no severe pain, and a very little, brief minor pain.

I hate dentists. However, it's good to take care of your dental health. I had the root of a wisdom tooth wrapped around my jawbone, they put me completely under to fix it, as they had to break my jawbone to get it out. Sounds FAR worse than what it was. However, I've also had a root canal, which wasn't bad, except for one second of blinding pain.

LOL.....the first time I had a root canal, it was an absolute disaster, because one of the roots didn't numb properly and when the doc went in there with her ice pick, I freaked..... To her credit, she calmed me down nicely and squirted novocaine right into the root, and that took care of that. But by the time it was all over, the puddle of sweat I was lying in was so deep, that it actually made a little splashing sound when I sat up, lol. this was approx. 15 years ago. About 6 years ago, I had another one on the matching tooth on the other side, and I was expecting the worst. It actually wasn't bad at all, I didn't feel anything except the initial injections of novocaine, and it was over with way before I expected it to be. I wanted to kiss that dentist. The costs are high, though, even with insurance. For some reason, most insurances only offer 50% for the crown, and 70% to 80% for the root canal.

I am on Medicare so everything is on me to pay for it. I am calling the first dentist on Monday to see how much a root canal would be. I admit I should of ask him then but I was too worried about the whole thing. I know a filling is about $120 but unsure about the root canal. To me, my mouth is too small to have all of my teeth and yes, I have a crooked smile (which is why I don't smile in pics).
