On the eve of the Copenhagen Climate Summit,I thought it might be a good idea if a poll was taken of the people here regarding climate change as a man made problem.

So, of the people who are here, who believes climate change is caused by us, humankind and what we are doing by living on this planet ?

Not enough options Aneirin; as it stands I could choose either or both; A is clearly the case, B is possibly even probably the case but I'm not entirely convinced as yet.

Having said that, the dangers of being wrong on B are enormous only in the one outcome so pending convincing evidence to the contrary I support pre-emptive actions to do what can be done, and the happy side effects that will provide. In any case however we can regard as negligible what actions we might take compared to the effects of A should certain circumstances come to pass.

I can't choose either one, I think it's a mix of both manmade and natural.

The reason I gave two options was to get a simple yes or no situation, I wanted to poll people's oppinion, as it stands now.

Now, that does not mean that belief has to be fixed, because  as times change, more evidence becomes available, more thinking is done, more truth emerges, and less political points are sought and scored, a personal oppinion can change, as with life, nothing is written in stone, so no worries there.

But bearing in mind the vast amount of noise that is created on these forums when climate comes into debate, I am very surprised this poll is so quiet. I did think with people being so vociferous, they would like to strike their mark, for or against as it stands now, as it is without access to public forum on this internet, we, the common or garden person, have no say in what concerns us. We cannot voice our oppinion, those in charge don't seek our oppinion, and don't want it, but we have a right to be heard. They, the politicians we vote for and put into power purportedly to represent us, need to know where we stand, to do other, is to suggest their oppinion counts, not ours, they can and will rim the ass of whoever to achieve their financial and political aim, we are just the uneducated suckers who enable their position.

lol

D) climate changes naturally, according to geologic, solar, & etc cycles; & humans have the capacity to exert enormous impact on that naturally shifting climate thru their activities, particularly widespread industrial pollution conducted over centuries with increasing intensity. & since our understanding of those natural climate cycles is kinda hazy, the probability that we will cause deleterious shifts to occur is difficult to calculate but carries significant risk of falling into various adverse scenarios . . . . . .

A capacity matched only by our ability to pretend that we can make messes that magically disappear, especially if that's the most convenient choice . . . . . .

That's the one I'd pick . . . . .

Oh. & you rarely hear this brought up. On or about the year 2006 humans pulled the trillionth barrel of petroleum oil out of the ground; something on the order of 80% of that has been combusted incompletely, & a (yes, small) fraction of that partially combusted material has been aerosolized & flung into the atmosphere. (Some of that in particles so small that they may drift for centuries . . . . ) & then there's the coal, another carbon-rich fuel we've been combusting even longer . . . .. But pay no attention to any of that, we'll just keep playing at being children bringing garbage into our room & pretending it'll go away on its own . . . . .

[:D]

Thanks for the chance to rant a little, Aneirin . . . .

I think it's a mixture of both.  The problem is that most of those who shout the loudest cant even pronounce Meterology and Physical Oceanography, much less pass a course in it.  The science surrounding the theory is complex enough till prob 95% of the population isnt capable of wrapping their minds around it so a lot of them just sit there and bunch up, drooling, behind whoever shouts the loudest and tells them what they want to hear (and this is both sides of the debate).
Things are warming, whether we have caused it or not is up for debate.  The problem is, can we afford to be wrong for the sake of billion dollar profits in the pockets of a few hundred people?  We have to get alternative energy online.  Even if human caused global warming is a total bunch of crap, oil is a finite resource and we do too many things with it that dont involve combustion.  Our civilization as we know it is dependent on these "alternative uses".  Let's get our species in for the long haul and not just till the oil runs out.  The decisionmakers seem to have the attitude that "I'll be long gone before that happens so FUCKEM"
