Curved swords are illegal? I'd find an example in a museum and argue that if they're legally collectable, then they could legally be sold as art.

...all valid parts of the artistic experience, but not necessarily what needs to be done when trying to pass an exam ;) Especially in the arts......
Maybe combing both concepts would be a good idea. Mentioning your inspiration but also pointing out that craftsmen may or may not have had a personal philosophy concerning their work. For a medieval metal worker which was more important, the internal process that went into making the sword,or the quality of the final product? "Artists statements" are meant to push boundaries, not to be easily digestible imho.
