Lucienne -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/5/2009 2:24:20 PM)

I don't wear stilettos, but most of my work shoes have 3-3 1/2 inch heels. I have a lovely pair of patent red leather 4 inch heels, but I've never dared wear them to work, only social events.

I'm above average height to begin with, so wearing heels makes me tower. I love it.

ETA: It did take practice, first to build the muscles in feet and then to walk with some grace. Most women in heels just kind of clomp clomp around. The key for me is to shorten my gait, and be aware of my hips more than my knees... because I do not have supermodel sashay skills.

Aynne88 -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/5/2009 2:45:53 PM)

I wear stiletto's almost daily, 4 inches or so, generally a pump style, and I like a very thin heel, but I have been wearing them for so long I am not comfortable in flats, but I do have some pairs that are definitely more comfortable than others and I tend to wear those when I know it's going to be a shorter period. Some of them are truly comfortable though and I wear them for 10 to 12 hours. I think one of the things to look for is that even on initial try-on make sure that nothing feels pinched or cramped or it will only get worse. I always buy those little high heel gel inserts from Doctor Scholl's too or similar and they are tiny and not visible but the make them for the ball and the hell of the shoe and they feel so good. Just wear your shoes for short time periods at first and get some gel pads and you"ll be fine! :)

I'll second PS:  100 lbs weight-loss is no mean feat.  Well done, GM!

But, but . . .  I understand that those who've lost a lot of weight, quite rapidly, can have a little trouble with balance at first.  Careful with those stilettos . . . .

First, congrats on your new, slimmer self.  [:)]

Second, when I was an exotic dancer, I routinely wore 5-inch stillettos for 8-10 hours a day.  Yes, it does take some practice.  The best advice I can give you is to walk slowly and make sure you give yourself plenty of down time in flats.  If you wear very high heels for too long, your tendons will eventually atrophy and you won't be able to walk in flats.

If you wear a slightly wider heel (say 1/2 inch as opposed to stilletto) and/or a shoe with a low platform (1+ inch), you'll find the shoes much more comfortable.  If you look around, you can even find shoes with an internal platform that doesn't show.  The platform makes the shoes feel like the heels are lower because you're not forced onto your toes as hard as with non-platform shoe.  You may also want to pick up some Slip Grips or other brand of non-skid stick-ons to put on the soles of your shoes.  They'll help keep you from sliding around on wood or other smooth flooring.

littlewonder -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/5/2009 5:37:15 PM)

I wear stilettos on a pretty regular basis. My highest is 6" and have never really had a huge problem wearing them, never really practiced in them.

The only problem is that the higher they are the slower I have to walk.

My only suggestion is to wear them on a regular basis, stand up straight, walk slowly and be conscious.

CarrieO -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/5/2009 5:54:52 PM)

I've only recently been able to consider heels of any kind because of foot problems.  I bought a beautiful pair of leather boots and a pair of pumps, both only with 3 1/2 heels, and I'll adimit I'm all wobbly.  I used to wear them when I was younger, 4-5 inch heels, and I felt like an amazon.  Now i feel like a newborn foal trying to stand...patience.

That being said, I love Fluevogs and THIS would be my choice for christmas!  Very sexy, in a gorgeous wine-colored leather and manageable heels.

Hello, I find if you wear a heel with a built in platform it can make for a much more comfortable experience. I have a pair of four inchers i can wear daily because of this great invention.... Welcome to the wonderful world of shoes....

MissAnimus -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/6/2009 11:06:33 PM)

I love heels. I have small feet and I can't wear anything higher than 4.5 inches unless it has a platform. Whenever I get a new pair I scuff the bottom on a rough patch of concrete in a parking lot so I don't slip. If they are extra pointy and ridiculously high I find that half a glass of wine helps take any 'wobble' out of my step. I'm very serious about that one- just don't overdo it. If I'm going clubbing and will be dancing a lot I like to put an extra cushy insole in my heels. The insole feels nice plus it makes the shoes fit a little bit more snug which makes me feel a little more secure in them and keeps me from getting blisters. Having a sub around to rub your feet at the end of the night is fabulous too.

MsFlutter -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/7/2009 6:46:48 AM)

I love stilettos - mine range from 4" - 6 1/2". As Sylvere said, the platforms are less jarring. Platforms also give me distance back from the air bag in my vehicle. Hundreds of short women are injured yearly by air bags as we tend to sit so close to the steering wheel.

If you study the shoe styles out there, you will see that there are stilettos available (Nine West, Jessica Simpson) with just the slightest bit of upturn in the toe. That little upturn makes a LOT of difference in that it your foot is not crammed down into the toe of the shoe.

I've been wearing stilettos so long that I don't remember ever practicing but I'm sure muscle fatigue is possible. Don't be shy about bonding with a talented cobbler to keep the heel tips in good order. Other than the gel insoles, I wouldn't go a day without a bottle of ShoeStretch.  An alternative to Shoe Stretch is to pour alcohol inside the shoes (along interior edges) just before you slip them on. They will stretch while you wear them.

Note: ShoeStretch or alcohol may not always be a good idea for some patent leathers or suedes and can be risky with Peau de Soie.

QueenRah -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/7/2009 6:49:29 AM)

G-Mambo,

4 1/2" was the highest I could wear and not feel like I was falling over. But, this was when I was 20 years younger and 40lbs lighter. If you want to wear heels, but don't like the height, kitten heels look sexy, too. I tend to wear them, more often, when I need to be able to walk.

The suggestions for slightly wider heels and plats at the balls of the feet are great ideas. You'll get more stability with the wider heel and less foot torsion (sp?) with the platform.

Bon chance and congrats!

SolangeRichards -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/7/2009 7:18:38 AM)

With heels, as in many pursuits, practice makes perfect.

A good option is to run up the heel heights over a few days.  Start with flats that are shaped like a pump in order to accomodate the foot to that style, move onto kitten heels and then onto progressively higher heels.

A trick to get height now, but more stability would be anything with a chunky heel.  Another would be a wedge with a sculpted platform.  From behind they look very much like a thin heel, yet you enjoy a great deal of stability and easy walkability

Ladynslave -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/7/2009 12:20:38 PM)

The highest I have worn is a 6" with a 2" platform so my feet were really only at a 4" angle which is pretty typical for my non platform height heels.  The transition was not hard for me other than I did have to take smaller steps.  I love platforms for the fact that I can wear them longer before the ball of my foot starts to hurt.

Slave has a pair of 5" with a 1" platform.  He needed a bit more practice as he had never worn heels before he met me.

GM, congrats on your weight loss.  Not an easy task.

MissDita -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/7/2009 12:51:59 PM)

hi GM,

I'm used to wearing heels since I was very young. But only since 2 years I wear stiletto-boots with a 6 inch heel. I can walk on them easily on a flat surface inside the house. But out on the street with wholes and bumps on the surface, if it has been a while, I always have to practice for a while before I can walk with self-confidence and look straight ahead in stead of looking at the ground. I notice that putting your weight towards your toes gives you more stability on difficult surfaces.

My advice is to practice inside the house on them for some time before you go anywhere with them.

greetings, Miss Dita

LadyHibiscus -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/7/2009 12:54:10 PM)

Congratulations on your weight loss!! I envy you your new shoe adventures! I used to wear heels all the time, now I rarely do. I stuck with 3" heels with no platform, and when I wore them, it was through a full day of teaching. How did I do it? Stilettos and pointe shoes are in the same "WTF??" category for me these days. LadySunn -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/7/2009 9:23:00 PM)

I was born to wear 4inch stiletto heels... in my career I wear skirt suits and heels, after work I wear high heels with stockings and skirts/dresses and in the summer I wear high heel sandals with sun dresses.

Shall I demonstrate how to properly stomp on a body part ?   smiles & giggles

Enjoy the feeling of sensual empowerment from balancing on such delicate and powerful shoes.

Hierodule -> RE: STILETTO /HEELS (12/7/2009 9:45:47 PM)

The tallest I've worn were six inchers. I don't think I want to go any higher. I never practiced, but I am a shorty with a low center of gravity.

these are the ones

I had to run sound at a party in those girls. No one told me before hand. If so I wouldn't have worn them. I was all dressed up having a drink and a dude form the opening a band was like "hey they told me to talk to you about setting up a PA" I was like "they did? How nice of them (grumble grumble.)" It was fine behind the board and running cable and stuff. Then this one lead singer decided it would be a great idea to jump into the crowd  and run around so i had to go down there with him and babysit his cable so it didn't pull the tiny mixer we were using right off the table. I followed him around holding it above my head and when I felt it get taught i had to grab him by the shirt a push him back towards the stage he knew what was up and cooperated with me but it was rough. I pulled it off  with more grace then I do in sneakers[:)]. Being a "roadie" or stage hand is a thankless job, I know that. I didn't get any extra kudos for doing it in six inch heels, didn't really expect to. And thankfully patent leather cleans up well.
