I'm glad to see someone mentioned this book, although the last time I checked it was out of print. I've read most of the others mentioned, and this one was my favorite. I think you might want to consider what direction you are headed in, because some are better for mental bondage and others become more ideal for the physical aspects.

The last book i read filled from cover to cover with sex was 'the sexual life of Catherine M.' by Catherine Millet... it was a brilliant read and it gave me a massive insight in aspects of my own total sluttery... thank you Catherine!

One of my first was "The story of O" by Pauline Reage.

As letters or installments to a men your in an sm relationship, as the text origanally was written, it makes a lot of sense. And although i did not know it at the time, that was the way i read it, as phantasies were everything is perfect in the choosen universe.

It confronted me in a big way, some things turned me on, other made me laugh and even other left me neutral.

Before that i "lended" a book my mother had, The sexual phantasies of women by Nancy Friday, that was a very good overview and helped me understand, that i was not alone.

The Marquis de Sade was in the library of my parents, i probably read it too early. Was shocked and turned on and irritated by the ramblings and that huge focus on catholic church.

Later on, i read whatever came my way, but i never something like SM 101, because i am not interested in stuff like that.

I learned a lot by reading mailing lists and looking at shibari photos, because i loved that style since before i knew it was an art.

And the stories people told were very important for me, especially if they were some years older than me.

You can still get this one combined with her other book, Miss Abernathy's Concise Slave Training Manual, in Erotic Slavehood: A Miss Abernathy Omnibus from Amazon.com.

This Curious Human Phenomenon by Jay Masters is an interesting read, but I have to throw a vote behind The Loving Dominant, Screw the Roses, and just for interest's sake, The Ethical Slut, because it has interesting views on managing human relationships.

~ Fast Literary Reply ~

Going off the board for a moment, if you want to try a book that gets deeply into the mental domination and its potential application; read (hopefully again) George Orwell's 1984.

It provides an understanding of a Master's absolute domination over a slave to the point that the slave can, not only consider 2+2=5 but really believe it.

Now you may not want to utilize rats to torture your slave, and you probably should skip the last chapter when Winston is killed because he achieves total, perfect LOVE for Big Brother. However the psychology of absolute obedience and understanding the nature of dominance over another along with the responsibility it requires is illustrated best in the exchanges between Winston and his Master. The goal is not just dominance. The goal is unquestioning and focused behavior outside the view of the Master; a belief that Master (Big Brother) is right, even if the definition of 'right' (or who Oceania was at war) changes as do the 'limits' and activities in any living relationship.

Once understood hopefully the goal, unlike in the story, becomes positive. The goal is what's best and beneficial not for 'Big Brother' but for the relationship. The relationship becomes 'Big Brother' and, as in the story, both the Master and the slave serve it; in different ways, having different responsibilities; but neither functions without the service to the relationship.

Okay, sorry for the pseudo-intellectual rambling. But truly, 1984 was, for me, the most influential M/s - D/s instructional book.

Maybe you've never read it, maybe you only read the 'Cliff Note' version to do a book report, maybe you only saw the movie; try it one more time keeping in context a D/s relationship.

To learn how to be more present, focused, and aware in the moment -- "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle.

To learn how to act with greater integrity -- "The Four Agreements" by Miguel Ruiz.

Both of these books can help one have more within to share with their partner, whether by greater self mastery (of thoughts and feelings) or greater self surrender (of ego associations).

Of course I did - and DO! My application is pending! I love the pure mental sadism of showing a picture to someone tied up and then tossing it down into a fiery trash dump telling him/her - it never existed and neither did the person pictured.

But as a budding sadist - I envisioned myself as O'Brien in this exchange. The epiphany of Winston; where strapped down on a table, suffering pain, attached to a 1984 verson of a TENS unit, he learns to please his Master and to believe...

'How many fingers, Winston?'
'Four! Stop it, stop it! How can you go on? Four! Four!'

'How many fingers, Winston?'

'Five! Five! Five!'

'No, Winston, that is no use. You are lying. You still think there are four. How many fingers, please?'

'Four! five! Four! Anything you like. Only stop it, stop the pain!'

Abruptly he was sitting up with O'Brien's arm round his shoulders. He had perhaps lost consciousness for a few seconds. The bonds that had held his body down were loosened. He felt very cold, he was shaking uncontrollably, his teeth were chattering, the tears were rolling down his cheeks. For a moment he clung to O'Brien like a baby, curiously comforted by the heavy arm round his shoulders. He had the feeling that O'Brien was his protector, that the pain was something that came from outside, from some other source, and that it was O'Brien who would save him from it.

'You are a slow learner, Winston,' said O'Brien gently.

'How can I help it?' he blubbered. 'How can I help seeing what is in front of my eyes? Two and two are four.'

'Sometimes, Winston. Sometimes they are five. Sometimes they are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once. You must try harder. It is not easy to become sane.'

He laid Winston down on the bed. The grip of his limbs tightened again, but the pain had had ebbed away and the trembling had stopped, leaving him merely weak and cold. O'Brien motioned with his head to the man in the white coat, who had stood immobile throughout the proceedings. The man in the white coat bent down and looked closely into Winston's eyes, felt his pulse, laid an ear against his chest, tapped here and there, then he nodded to O'Brien.

'Again,' said O'Brien.

The pain flowed into Winston's body. The needle must be at seventy, seventy-five. He had shut his eyes this time. He knew that the fingers were still there, and still four. All that mattered was somehow to stay alive until the spasm was over. He had ceased to notice whether he was crying out or not. The pain lessened again. He opened his eyes. O'Brien had drawn back the lever.

'How many fingers, Winston?'

'Four. I suppose there are four. I would see five if I could. I am trying to see five.'

'Which do you wish: to persuade me that you see five, or really to see them?'

'Really to see them.'

'Again,' said O'Brien.

Perhaps the needle was eighty -- ninety. Winston could not intermittently remember why the pain was happening. Behind his screwed-up eyelids a forest of fingers seemed to be moving in a sort of dance, weaving in and out, disappearing behind one another and reappearing again. He was trying to count them, he could not remember why. He knew only that it was impossible to count them, and that this was somehow due to the mysterious identity between five and four. The pain died down again. When he opened his eyes it was to find that he was still seeing the same thing. Innumerable fingers, like moving trees, were still streaming past in either direction, crossing and recrossing. He shut his eyes again.

'How many fingers am I holding up, Winston?'

'I don't know. I don't know. You will kill me if you do that again. Four, five, six -- in all honesty I don't know.'

'Better,' said O'Brien.

Speaking of which do you and Mr. P have any plans to come down to LA anytime during the holidays?

Plans can always be made.  I hear that you'll be having a friendly visitor this month, whom I've wanted to meet for some time.  LOL.

I always thought O'Brien was a total homo, and I would have told him just that. Faggot was getting off on the whole thing. Bring on the rats, you pillow biter. 1984 is the greatest warning about giving up our rights ever written.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. I just ordered a bunch of books from amazon--you should all demand commissions!

Now see - I feel the same way about body builders with no chest hair.

Not all literary critics can agree.

No offense there, kal, but some of us sadists do enjoy torturing others.  It kind of goes with the definition.
