One of my first was "The story of O" by Pauline Reage. As letters or installments to a men your in an sm relationship, as the text origanally was written, it makes a lot of sense. And although i did not know it at the time, that was the way i read it, as phantasies were everything is perfect in the choosen universe. It confronted me in a big way, some things turned me on, other made me laugh and even other left me neutral. Before that i "lended" a book my mother had, The sexual phantasies of women by Nancy Friday, that was a very good overview and helped me understand, that i was not alone. The Marquis de Sade was in the library of my parents, i probably read it too early. Was shocked and turned on and irritated by the ramblings and that huge focus on catholic church. Later on, i read whatever came my way, but i never something like SM 101, because i am not interested in stuff like that. I learned a lot by reading mailing lists and looking at shibari photos, because i loved that style since before i knew it was an art. And the stories people told were very important for me, especially if they were some years older than me.
