What someone chooses as a screenname can say a lot about that person. It could be something they chose because it's their kink. If their kink is not mine then I'm going to pass them right by. Every single time I've ever gotten an email from someone with "daddy" in their name I never respond. I have zero interest in such things. It would be a waste of both our time for me to do otherwise.

CaringandReal -> RE: What's in a Name (12/8/2009 4:15:50 PM)

Hate Evil Cruel Devil Sick 666 Psycho Contempt Pig destroyer Satan SOB Killer abbattior death slut meat >> if these are in a maledom name, they are huge turnoffs. I usually delete their emails unread.

Sadist, brutal, rough, extreme strict severe >> no problem

SeeksHucow >> I rolleth my eyes

Speaking of which, Fetishes in names >> I don't like, even if I like the fetish. Any fetish, "spanker," even "Daddy," is a turn-off because they make the person seem very limited, as if that's all that defines them.

References to their cock or wallet or brain size >> If they have to advertise... (in other words, it's a big BLEAH! to me)

Honorifics get past my radar, but I still wonder about the sort of person who would choose something like that for a screen name (I question their intelligence) and I watch them closely and suspicously.

I also like real names and creative, non-offensive names the best.

I normally choose fairly creative screen names...except when I am trying to hide and blend in. The trouble with a hide-and-blend-in name is that it doesn't attract the sort of people I want to attract. When it gets to be too much of a problem, though, I know what to do. ;)

breatheasone -> RE: What's in a Name (12/8/2009 4:23:10 PM)

i agree with you CaringandReal, the only ones that REALLY make me roll me eyes are the "allwiseandknowinglistentome" flavor screen names. i mean really, if you HAVE to tell people that in your screen name, rather than let them discern it for themselves, then theres probably not much there to begin with[;)]. Along the same lines as "masterbigcock" who actually has a 2 incher LOL[:D]

Hawkwindblues -> RE: What's in a Name (12/8/2009 5:44:05 PM)

Your name CallaFirestormBW is one of the names i really like, because it transports information.

I do not know, what the shrug means in your post, do you try to imply something and if so what?

I don't like kinky handles. So many boys have nicks like cumslutwhore4Mistress69. Seriously. I like a boy with an intelligent handle.

When it came to my handle, 2 things came to mind: 1) I'm a Lady 2) To the unsuspecting eye, I look too angelic to be mean ;-)

NihilusZero -> RE: What's in a Name (12/8/2009 8:14:44 PM)

I have a natural draw to usernames that have feline words or ones that have some semblance of being poetic or intellectual.

OMG Gypsy, you can have the last 3 but I sooo call dibs on the first one. LOL.

As far as the OP goes, yes the name does affect my perception of the person at first, but usually interacting with the person can counteract a bad first impression. Of course there are exceptions, generally I find it hard to move past "4u" or any type of explicit sexual/BDSM thing with nothing else because while yes this is a BDSM site I'm interested in someone as a person not just their role.

For example the difference between, say, "jennaslave" and "slavetoserveyou" - the first one is okay to me, because it just tells me "this is Jenna, who happens to be a slave" whereas the second tells me "it will be hard to get to know this person outside of a BDSM context, they likely won't want to meet for coffee and discuss the news on a first meeting."

Also misspelled names tend to bother me unless they're intentionally misspelled - for example Missokyst's name is awesome, whereas someone named DarkGodess would just make me cringe. But that's something I'm willing to look past - one of my best friends IRL is dyslexic and he is the WORST speller (seriously, he can misspell words on a grade 3 spelling test) but he's also one of the most intelligent people I know, so while the first impression might be bad I'm willing to keep my mind open to the fact that spelling a word is less important than understanding the world.

Names with titles in them aren't so bad to me, I see no difference between "MasterJohn" and "slavejane" in pretension because it just shows the type of role they see themselves in, but again if the name is SOLELY a BDSM thing (ie "ServeURMaster") then no thanks. And I agree that multiple titles (MasterLordX) are usually bad but at the same time I see no problem with MasterFireMaam's name so again it depends on the person - if they're an intelligent poster I don't care so much about the name, whereas if they aren't then the name is just another strike against them.

I know my name is pretty boring, but I do also like intriguing names (GYPSYMAMBO, NihilusZero) or witty names (DomImus) because they make me curious about the person.

And I don't really mind so much if people put numbers in the name because you can't have a duplicate name, but a 69 or 666 gives a slightly negative response. A birth year or random number is neutral, and a 42 or 93 or 777 or something gives a tick in the positive box.

(CNJDom here):  I believe that there is something to a name even if it is a nickname.  When the world was young and still warm like fresh apple pie, there was the IRC.  It was just a stone's throw from the amazing multi-node BBS chatrooms that were fast developing...yes I'm carbon-dating myself, but it's relevant in that prior to all this, and that, there was (please hold onto to something) CBs.  The original chatroom if within range... as embarrassing as platform shoes, and twice the fun!  The nicknames back then, were not unlike the nicks of today, descriptive and to the point.

Well not for us all, and some of us didn't pick out very creative nicknames or handles (my nick here is as exciting as dried out pasta...but back in the IRC days, I worked on stupid and silly handles so that it would spark discussion and dialog.  I like humor, but with the nick I chose here...not so humorous, but to the point none the less.  But you're right, some of these people that chose their nicks must have been drunk or very tired to come up with some of these beauties...

If you are going to pick a fetish as your nick, then you've either said to the rest of us:  "hey!  Guess what I'm obsessed with?", and you've just labeled and categorized yourself (sorry about that diaper-people with the moniker with the word "poopy"-something) into predominantly one area of play (and showing a limited openness to the other aspects that BDSM has).  I feel that you're communicating some form of decision making pre-determined generalization about that person's character a little bit...  and if you don't mind that, then by all means go for it!

But if you do, then you'll take the time to think of a good nickname/handle to display as your-own.  There's power in a word and so goes it with nicknames / handles.  Take care.

I'm with you! If you have to say that you're a Dom or Master for others to believe it...

Rednekcol -> RE: What's in a Name (12/10/2009 10:48:40 AM)

Personally, I know a name says something to me.  I tend to give a person a chance beyond the name to make an impression though, because really, a name can be chosen in haste or distaste and not give the impression expected.  On the other hand, poetic, creative, intriguing, or simply pretty screennames certainly catch my eye.

I agree that names that include a fetish or a humiliation factor certainly are not very appealing.  While fetishes are fun things, using them in a name seems like they are the defining attribute of your submission, which isn't the kind of submissive I am looking for.  Those who choose self-derogatory terms do themselves a disservice in my eyes, because I don't want a girl who actually things of herself as worthless, ugly, etc.  What joy or respect is there in owning that?  Someone who has a high opinion of herself, and yet will submit and accept humiliation from me, now that is something different entirely!

As for my own, I tend to either choose an amalgam of words that describe me, or I pick some kind of name which expresses some interest, but also is a puzzle to the people.  An example of the former is my name SchroedingerHepcat, which I use for all my academic, science, and techie accounts.  (For those who care, it refers the the quantum physics thought experiment that has become known as Schroedinger's Cat, combining it with my love of swing dance and music from the 1920-1940s with the reference to "Hepcat".)  My nick on here was an attempt at the latter, though I have come to know that it mostly gives the wrong impression, for, when I chose it, I failed to note that most people would read it as "red neck", which couldn't be further from the impression I was looking for, or from the truth, for that matter.  Oh well, I don't want to start a brand new profile, and there is no migration from one name to another, so I'm stuck with it.  (It is actually a simple anagram of two names of characters from a favorite series of books.)

I don't think user names mean a lot, they are handy to detect nigerian scammers but what people have to say is what's important.

Anyone called 'OneDayataTimeSweetJesus' is alright with me. Haven't come across her yet but I'll keep on ploughing through.

Justme696 -> RE: What's in a Name (12/11/2009 1:15:39 PM)

just thinking-

I am curious when the next thread starts in which we discuss how open we are

but for now lets be prejudiced about names..lol

but seriously..I dislike slut and whore in nicknames. ANd still when I own a girl..I want her to act like one by times. Double moral/stabndard? yes.

NorthernGent -> RE: What's in a Name (12/11/2009 2:03:56 PM)

I'd be happy with: 'ThisWholeAbsurd/Comical/Tragic/BusinessWillNeverBeSettled'. Realistic yet forward looking.

Justme696 -> RE: What's in a Name (12/11/2009 2:08:30 PM)

I would use underscores ..This_Whole_Absurd
makes it more impressive
