Toppingfrmbottom -> how long do you suppose it takes one to start menstrating again after 3 plus years of depo (12/8/2009 10:58:19 PM)

I got off my depo November 24th, and I was just wondering, not in a hurry or nothing.

if you were on it for long long term how long did it take YOU to go back to menstruating?

I didn't stay on it for long because I was spotting and having violent mood swings, but it took about another three months to fall back into a pattern.

After 3 years it can take up to a year to get back to normal.

verity

I was wondering if there's a "waiting period" before using another hormone-based birth control method afterward...do you have to wait to start menstruating again?

thornhappy I don't believe so, but I am choosing to stay off birthcontrol for now, and just not have penetrative sex. However it IS a matter of pads and stuff, and general questionment.

No waiting period, other than waiting until your next shot would be due.  I went on depo after my son was born, but it killed my sex drive (though maybe that was in large part the asshole i was married to then) and made me moody (again, maybe the ex?), so i talked to my gyn, and she suggested that new mirena IUD.  We waited until it was time for my next shot, then did the procedure to have the mirena put in.  They numbed me up well with this awesome spray, so it didn't hurt.  I was crampy for a day or two, but that's it.  I've had that in for over a year now, and haven't had a period since I got pregnant for my son....spring 2007.

First of all, it hasn't even been a month since you went off of it. By "off of it" I'm going to assume that you mean you were due for another shot at that time and didn't get it. Logically, Depo Provera must provide for a "margin of error" so to speak. In other words, if you are due for you shot on the 24th and don't get it until the 30th, you still have some protection.

On a side note, it has always fascinated me how that would work. The shot lasts for 3 months, does that mean 90 days? On day 91, do you automatically have no protection or what? Obviously that can't be the case.

So you are asking a question after just 2 weeks? Each person is different as you have seen from the other posts. Did you discuss going off birth control with your gynocologist? I know that you have had other health issues, and I don't know if you are taking any medications, but your doctors should know about your decision in case it would indicate a change in meds.

Then there is the concept of whether or not you were "regular" before you started the shots. Has there been significant weight gain or loss during the period you were on the shot? These are all questions you should ask your doctor.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: how long do you suppose it takes one to start menstrating again after 3 plus years of depo (12/10/2009 4:52:26 PM)

Well by off it yes I chose to miss my shot, and I'm not continueing Depo as a choice of birthcontrol. I do n't know how the other question works though, I been on it so long I don't remember how it was explained any more.

I am also starting to see tinges of red when I wipe after peeing I believe all though that could be something else too, and I have to go to the gyno again to find out.

My gyno was all for what ever I wanted, and my general practitioner was thrilled, she said maybe I'd start loosing weight now, since she blames my birth control for me not loosing weight, since a lot of people did experience weight gain on it, but I know my weight gain is from loving food to much and exercise not enough lol. And how do I know this people ask? Because until my partner started feeding me fast food everytime I asked him to go out,  I was maintaining weight and even loosing weight, once I started getting

The biggest concern for me was flip flopping sexually we often go 6 or 7 months or more with out sex, and then suddenly want one day of sex, then go another long long extendedly long period then suddenly he decides it's not fair, because he knows I'd like to have a go and he's been putting me off, but  and we attempt to. I say attempt to cause it's not always enjoyable to try. so I was concerned about that you know because I don't want any supprise babies, but I was getting a basically un needed shot every 3 months, however I did enjoy not getting my periods so the shot was not completely fruitless.

I was taking the shot for three years, and didn't have a period for the last 2.5 years. I didn't have any bleeding for a couple months after going off Depo, then I had a couple months of random spotting, then a couple months of irregular periods (light bleeding for a week or super-heavy for a couple days, both with spotting). All told it took 6 months for it to regulate, which was a minor annoyance but not a big deal. I was regular before, and didn't have any significant changes in weight, exercise, or eating habits before/after beginning and ending depo treatment. I was very happy with the shot, but the steady boyfriend has a vasectomy - woohoo! - so it's an unnecessary expense. We do have an open relationship, and I use condoms and spermicide with other partners.

My gyno said if it's more than 6 months come back and see her asap, but it's to soon to worry about seeing her. I'm just not looking forward to waking up bloody and messy and no warning or nothing. So that's my concern.

The spotting and irregularity was annoying to say the least. You can wear liners 24/7 if you're concerned about it, but other than that I don't think there's much you can really do...but if I have any epiphanies I'll let you know [:)]

It's a shame I am to large for cloth diapers lol. I'd just wear them like panties.

You sew; you might make some.

angelikaJ, Or I could take the flannel sheet I bought to craft with and swaddle myself up in them lol. It would work.

yep, one month to you might never restart

never? that seems rather extreme.

bighappygoth39 -> RE: how long do you suppose it takes one to start menstrating again after 3 plus years of depo (12/22/2009 11:03:44 AM)

I was on it for about 9 years and though it suited me perfectly,my periods stopped after I was using it for about 6 months, which I actually preferred, but I had too much hormone in my system(can't remember now if it was oestrogen or progesterone) and also because of my age I had to come off it. It took about 18 months for my periods to come back, which I have to say came back much more regular and less heavy than before I was on it. I hope that helped anyway but by the look of things it all depends if it suited your body or not to how long it takes you to start menstruating again.x
