This is for posting quotes, proverbs, poems, stories and anecdotes of insight and wisdom. Maybe your own or others, but give credit to the author if not your words.

Desiderata

(-- written by Max Ehrmann in the 1920s --
Not "Found in Old St. Paul's Church"! )

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Hello lushy,
I have always loved that poem.  Especially this part:  Strive to be happy.

Happiness requires work.  It's a good lesson.

Hugs,
sunshine

(and to add to the thread - My grandfather always said "all things in moderation, nothing in excess".  I know he wasn't the first to say it, but he was the first one to say it to me!)

Lushy. . .

I sent that to my mother!  Thanks!

       "God,
Grant me the serenity,
To accept the things I cannot change;
The courage, to change the things that I can;
And the wisdom, to know the difference. "

I'm not in AA, NA, OA or any other _A program but I have found this prayer (or in my case, mantra) a useful reminder of my abilities and limitations.  I also find the word "god" is easily replaced with any other diety...as needed...or not, as the case may be, depending on your personal spirituality.

That's funny, I always modified that idiom into "all things in moderation, especially moderation." So, I live my life modestly, but I remind myself never to be afraid to break loose every once in a while.

A stitch in time, saves nine.

An ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure.

If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

I just took this off a friend's facebook page because I worry waaaaaay too much about the future & it speaks to me:

Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its trouble... it empties today of its strength!

The biggest obstacles to our progress exist within our own lives in the form of cowardice and the tendency to give up.
Breaking through these barriers will unleash a surging wave of change.

Boys get blow jobs, men get their cocks sucked

*that was Resident 11, Cuffkinks, wasn't it?

I believe it was the yummy Resident Sadist who said that, sunny.

This is an all time favorite of mine...
