Status: offline 		The year's coming to a close. Most Americans will not have read any books, notably, but I'm holding Politics and Religion stalwarts and lovable sociopaths to a higher standard.

What were the best non-fiction books you read this year?

Fiasco is a little strong at this point, though one person already listed a 'non-book.'

Once you get beyond the horrific ritual sacrifice and blatant cannibalism of my people,
I suppose that underneath it all, this one really strikes at the home and heart for myself.

It's an archaeological study that offers a surprisingly modern and feminist perspective on the ancient world: women were far more important than Goreans and other assorted naturalists would have us believe.

On a serious note though, it's a fascinating study of the evolution of the priestess through antiquity, and beautifully illustrated - I was given a hardback copy for my birthday (Mums know what their daughters want).

Trying to think of a thoughtful response... ... ....

For what it's worth, my favorite book this year was probably David Graeber's 'Toward an Anthropological Theory of Value: The False Coin of Our Own Dreams which is a lot less lame than the title would suggest. There's a quote on the back of the book that sums it up -- "This is an extraordinary contribution to social science theory. What a contrast with the self-righteous sludge we usually have to endure!"

New York City residence at the Hotel Elysee. He is buried in St. Louis, Missouri.

I was able to free myself of that horrible addiction through the George Bush/Sarah Palin 12-step program.

It saved my life.
