AnimusRex -> The Iraq War Lies- 45 Minutes to Doom (12/9/2009 11:03:49 AM)

I was about to resurrect Lady Ellen's thread about the Enquiry into the Iraq war, but decided it should have its own-

Excellent reporting by Glenn Greenwald, deconstructing the pack of lies told to promote the war in Iraq:
Tony Blair's taxi-derived "45-minute" WMD claim

"An Iraqi taxi driver may have been the source of the discredited claim that Saddam Hussein could unleash weapons of mass destruction within 45 minutes, a Tory MP claimed today.

Adam Holloway, a defence specialist, said MI6 obtained information indirectly from a taxi driver who had overheard two Iraqi military commanders talking about Saddam's weapons.

The 45-minute claim was a key feature of the dossier about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction that was released by Tony Blair in September 2002. Blair published the information to bolster public support for war."

It is estimated that around 100,000 people have died in this war; America will have invested perhaps 3 Trillion dollars by the end of it all.
And all this, based on the tip from a fucking taxi driver.

Bush, Cheney, Blair and Rummy were not innocently led astray- they pulled the trigger on shit they knew was false.
In a just world, these guys would be hobbling around in shackles and orange jumpsuits.

I havent spoken to anyone here in the UK, who ever believed Iraq could launch WMD`s at us period, let alone in 45 minutes. I am guessing that the desire to get rid of Saddam made those in power cling to any excuse, however flimsy.

It's all the fault of the French.  When are we going to deport Kittin?

Thank God we now have freedom fries.

Ryan Lizza, The New Republic, October 7, 2002: Most remarkably, hours after Blair argued that Iraq could deploy chemical or biological weapons within 45 minutes of an order to use them, French President Jacques Chirac questioned whether Iraq had any proscribed weapons at all.

Here's another article on the subject.

This really makes me laugh, but I think that's the point. Instead of the old crypto-fascism, politicians have derived a new form: hilario-fascism.

Over my hubby's dead body. Besides, I'm a British national, so [8D] .

Nobody I knew ever believed the crap about the WMD (except for said hubby's ex-wife, but she's rabid, and actually voted for Bush). I think people wanted to believe the propaganda, but I'm afraid the very large majority of them were on these shores - meaning, the United States.

In Switzerland, where I was at the time (and a notoriously neutral country), people were up in arms over the invasion - and it takes a lot for the Swiss to get pissed off (unless you're trying to build minarets *sigh*).

That's the problem with you furreigners, you never believe what's right in front of your face.

So we're going to send you you back to whatever socialist hellhole you came from, be it France, Britain, wherever.

And to top it off we're going to institute an embargo on freedom fries.

You're such a cutie, ruly, I'm going to give you a big baiser mouillĂ©. Everyone knows the Belgians invented the fry, so this pathetic boycott was sad, at best, but what more can one expect from Bush & Co. ? Sad is the best they could do. (On a sidenote, it might do your compatriots a hell of a lot of good to cut out the frog fries anyway, if you see what I mean [8D] .)

Actually, it was a European nation that first made me sure that invading Iraq was a bad idea. I mean when you can't get the Germans to go to war, you gotta reexamine the whole issue.
