It looks like a coriolis effect on an ionized contrail.
You get some odd effects from the solar wind up near the magnetic pole since the earth's magnetic field becomes perpendicular to the ground.
... northern lights following an ionized trail to ground that might have been caused by a weather sounding missile or vertical atmospheric shear

Well, if it actually was an errant missile, I'm still not convinced though, and it can make such patterns that are visible for 100's of miles. We should use the old ICBM's, on the forth of july, as that display was way more interesting, than any crappy firework.

no, it's real. The reason it's so perfect is that it's happening in space, with no atmospheric wind to distort it. It's a rocket spinning out of control; the spiral is the plume of its exhaust jets.

I know that's what it has to be, but it still doesn't look right to me. The scale seems wrong. It seems as though it's either moving too fast and spreading the plume over too wide an area; or that it's at too low an altitude for the atmosphere not to be affecting the plume. But then, I'm not exactly a Ph.D in the field of out-of-control rockets, and like I say, I know that's what it has to be. Just doesn't look the way I'd expect it to look.

Sure does look cool as hell, though! I wish they'd fling a few of 'em my way, long as they're putting on free fireworks shows!

I read that the spiral is the fuel that is released from the first step of a rocket. The remaining fuel should leave the rocket part before it hits earth.
They don't want it to hit the ground as a bomb.

If Daniel Craig were nearby, they were just filming the sequel for 'The Golden Compass'
