now I don't use the shit expired or not, dun do any good for my headaches, but we do have a bottle and I opend it and the shit staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank so bad, the scent was so noxious my barf right now reflex was triggers.

I looked and it says it expired clear back in 1995. I turned to dad said this stuff smells plain god awfull and it's years and years old and he's like oh it's fine just don't use it if you don't like. and I was like well I won't. It's coated in an oarnge coating and I have* never every* in my life smelled pills so stanky. Is it normal to have a smell so strong and fowl? I'd say not

Au contraire - Vultures are fowl and frequently have a smell about them.
(Although even they would probably not eat aspirin dead 10 years.)

Aspirin seems to degrade into something with a vinegar-ish smell. I had a bottle that expired in 1992 and I opened it a few weeks ago, not remembering this was a bottle unfortunately left over from the home I shared with Betty Rubble, many long millenia ago.

I think most acids degrade that way. acetyl salicylic acid certainly seems to, whether plain like in the Bayer version or coated for buffering and duodenal vs gastric release and absorption.

Any aspirin product, when it smells like that, should either be flushed down the toilet or tossed out. Certainly should NEVER be tossed down the back of the throat and washed down said throat with water or any other liquid.

To answer your question, yes, the smell happens when the stuff spoils. Normally acetyl salicylic acid does not smell.

More info, if you want it, can be found on:

Edited to correct two dissimilar misspellings of acetyl salicylic acid. Next time I replace fingers, I will specify 'typist' not 'pianist'. <grumble>
