Brain -> Democrats Move to Block Drug Makers from Mining Rx Data (12/11/2009 11:48:18 AM)

I think this is a good thing because if you read the book , ‘The truth about the drug companies’ you find out drug companies spend much more money on marketing and advertising than they do on research and development of drugs. If you watch the evening news and see all the money spent on drug company commercials every night you know what I mean. It’s actually the government that spends the money doing research and then they give it away to the drug companies for free, the rights to make drugs. I think the whole system is ridiculous; I don't think this is a free enterprise system by the way. It really is corporate welfare and free enterprise for the middle class and the poor.

Democrats Move to Block Drug Makers from Mining Rx Data

Senate Democrats unveiled a proposal yesterday that would effectively ban pharmaceutical data mining. Sens. Herb Kohl of Wisconsin and Dick Durbin of Illinois say the measure will combat "harassing sales practices" and "restrain undue influence" of pharmaceutical salespersons. A spokesman for IMS Health said that interfering with data mining "has the potential to harm patients," since the information is used by federal agencies to track patient safety. "Consumer advocates" say the Senate effort could raise the profile of data mining in Congress and among state lawmakers.

I also want to mention all the people raising money privately by wearing and selling ribbons and doing bicycle rides and walks and other activities to raise money for research. And they give that money to societies like cancer or the multiple sclerosis Society or whatever, thank you.

AND

Drug companies would no longer be able to mine pharmacy records to track which doctors are prescribing their medications, under a proposal unveiled Thursday by two Senate Democrats

If the drug companies don't spend money on marketing and ads, they won't be able to sell their products and there will be no money for research.

lol, oh? So doctors are not going to know that pills and shots exist anymore? Is their memory going to be so corrupted that they will be unable to thumb a physicians desk reference or read their journals or search out information on line?

Nevertheless, ads and whatnot, spending more than research and development, that equation should be flipped,

nevertheless, that isn't the point of the legislation, it is datamining restrictions.

The drug companies aren't marketing and advertising to doctors. They are advertising and marketing to the patients. Just look at the TV. Everything from viagra to stuff to make your eyelashes thicker are being hawked with the slogan "Ask your doctor for".

The entire medical establishment wins. The doctors make money from the visits and for persecribing the stuff. The drug companies make money from selling it and the only people getting screwed are the gullible viewers who actually think they need the stuff because of the marketing campaigns.

When the Dems introduce a bill that will limit the data mining capabalities of a health care czar/administration agency be sure to let me know.

That is incorrect.

On the one hand a good idea.  On the other hand- congress has wrecked everything it has ever touched in the past 30 years.

I am afraid that 'data mining" that we have no idea the magnitude that this is done.  Consider that they now say not to post stuff on facebook that an employer can see.   Then figure how things can be archived for many many years.

Yahoo, cos, Verizon, they all sell your web activity- $20-$80.  Supposedly to Law Enforcement- but lets ask Valarie Plane, just how sure "confidential" guarantees are.

In what way do you mean wrecked everything? I don't know what you're talking about and what does Valarie Plane have to do with anything?. It was Dick Cheney who leaked her name and it was Scooter Libby who lied to protect Cheney. And they both belong in jail.

I think Hunky's point is that if the highest levels can leak out such sensitive information, what will their underlings do with our privacy ?

They do advertise to doctors as well. This includes bonuses like golf clubs, golf carts and cold hard cash among other things. They get more junk mail than we do but they have an incentive to read it.

And drug companies probably know a few "people" and are aware of what pills are selling on the streets. The old Rorers, 714s, 18.875s (black beauties I think) and others are sold on the street for a big profit. These were all legal drugs, they were not made in some guy's basement. I suspect they know that even though they get alot of money for the product, they are not charging like five bucks a pill. Even with the demise of these recreational drugs, to this day some people sell their pain pills and buy alcoholoic beverages, which probably works better than some.

Oxys and percs seem to be the pleasure de jure. And there are pills that cost like twenty bucks apiece that knocks out a severe migraine in a minute or so. They know they got you by the short hairs on that one.

They are in business to make money. It all adds up. (pun type phrase intended)
