Lately, because of the health care debate, we've heard a lot about the "conservative democrats"....Why don't we hear about "liberal republicans"? Now that might be a combination worth listening to.

Here ya go eta: Not very encouraging. From what I've seen and heard, most "liberal Republicans" seem to get disgusted and become Independents. K.

Because liberal liberals find us very inconvenient, and like to deny we exist? We're all a bunch of Limbaugh/Beck/Palin addicted robots, remember? Whatever works for you. Denial is cheaper than therapy.

Well, I would probably be considered "a liberal Republican", only somewhat to the right of McCain overall. As disgusted as Ive been with the GOP I also realize its the only option. A third party is a wasted vote on the national level 100% of the time.

I always think of Ron Paul as a liberal Republican because he's always talking about freedom. I probably wouldn't vote for him because I disagree with him about a lot of issues. For instance, I think we spend a lot of money fighting drugs and we don't get very good results or value for money spent but on the other hand I'm not sure I would agree with congressman Paul about decriminalizing drugs. I'm not sure exactly what his position is but I think it does include some de-criminalization. I think another thing he wants to do is get rid of the Food and Drug Administration. I remember someone saying, 'then we wouldn't have anybody to inspect food'. So that's not possible in my opinion, to get rid of the Department of Agriculture or the FDA, whatever it was. I definitely disagree with congressman Paul about healthcare. It's unfortunate because if military expenditures were reduced as he wishes there would be much more money for health care. One idea of Paul's appeals to me, I like when he talks about reducing the empire or why we have troops in so many countries. I don't think we need people in Europe. Europeans have no stomach for war after WWII. In fact, if I were Obama I would recommend the Russians join NATO. And I think if Obama pursued this policy Russia would become a member, the Russians are no longer interested in communism and I think they would welcome becoming a part of NATO and the Russians would feel less threatened improving Russian American relations. Another benefit of Russia joining NATO is they would be less inclined to support Iran.

You dont need an FDA to inspect food and more than you need a government agency that duplicates the work of the UL. Thats one of the easiest things to privatize. Russia in NATO would be less inclined to support Iran? Russia is still an enemy. Putin would have our heads on stick before you can say Vladivostok, and they will fuck anyone if its in their economic interest.

As far as I know, the UL is involved with labor or OSHA, occupational health and safety so I don't think they have the people with the educational background concerning food to inspect it. My understanding is right now they don't have enough people to inspect food and there is a lot of reliance on corporations to voluntarily comply. A lot of people need to be hired in order to increase inspections. I don't trust companies to comply voluntarily. Just like I don't trust insurance companies to treat people fairly when it comes to health care. I don't think you understand the Russians the way I do. You seem to have more of a Cold War mentality. Reagan asked them to tear down the wall and they did. Reagan wasn't afraid to ask that they tear down the wall and likewise I wouldn't be afraid of them joining NATO. I think if you give them a chance you'll find them to be reliable and cooperative and keen to get positive results. I would proceed cautiously, trust but verify, as Reagan would say.

Just compare John McCain's primaries in 2000 and in 2008... Presumably the proper Republicans, the ones who are plugged into the mass mind, find that sort of flip flopping offensive and would sooner that their representatives had been doing a bad impersonation of one of the patronising old farts from a '60s Heinlein novel from the start of their career. I suppose the concerns are reasonable enough: somebody whose shown past signs of rational behaviour might suffer a relapse.

NATO might actually be a bit more use if it had a decent sized conventional land army in it, which has to be a good thing, and providing Russia with a source of steady income is unlikely to do any harm politically either.
