To anyone out there who uses Kaspersky security software and Mozilla's Thunderbird for e-mail, I strongly recommend not to "upgrade" to Thunderbird V 3.0 at this time. There is a serious conflict between Kaspersky and the latest version of Thunderbird, which causes your entire e-mail profile to disappear. Inbox, sent mail, address book, folders, the whole works. Gone. In my case, I managed to restore it, but it took almost 6 hours, and not everyone who's had this problem has been able to recover their data. Mozilla is aware of this issue, and is working on a fix, but at this time they have elected not to pull back the release or to warn users before upgrading. You don't find out until after your e-mail vanishes and you go to their website for support. Just a word to the wise. If it saves one person's data, this'll be three minutes well-spent.

locally stored email? not online email accounts I hope, that would be a nightmare. good warning though.

No no, just your local folders. And in my case anyway, the data was still in my program files - but it was a bitch to restore, and some of the possible workarounds make it easy for a person to completely delete the files if they're not careful or not very savvy. Ultimately, i had to delete v3 and reinstall v2, but that apparently doesn't work for everyone and if they do it wrong they can overwrite the file instead of restoring it.

I use gmail to also import my other email accounts. But you can still forward to outlook and such. PErhaps that is an idea for extra security till it is fixed

Cut to brass tacks - you, as the upgrader are the guinea pig. My computer WORKS. Why do I need any upgrades ? If I had my druthers and it could do everything I want I would still use DOS. T

Everything I ever want to do on a computer, I could still be doing with Win 95 and the original Netscape if I could still use Win 95 and the original Netscape. Hell, I still use Office 97, and even that pisses me off because it's way more bloated and complex than it needs to be. I lose my whole fucking e-mail program and have to spend an entire day fixing it just so I can keep doing the same thing with my e-mail program that I was doing quite effectively 12 years ago - sending and receiving e-mails. Every year, computer technology becomes more pervasive and invasive, and every year I become less interested in anything to do with computers and the internet. It's harder and harder every year to order a la carte - every damned thing you want to do is integrated into a bundle of a half dozen other things that you don't want to do. And people just keep pulling out the credit cards and gobbling it up, because it's so... fucking... cool! Morons. We're a nation of complete morons, complete morons with Mastercard. A marketing major's wet dream.

"A marketing major's wet dream." I like that. I kinda like Office 97 as well, it runs like lighning on a newer system. If I am not mistaken 97 was right after a major life format change and is the oldest version you can use that's compatible with the new versions. And then there's Paint Shop Pro 4. It is my kind of program, it has no respect. I can do a screen capture out of a movie on Mediaplayer, which I don't think you're supposed to be able to do. I use it to resize images for my buddy the tatoo artist. I still have about a ten year old version of Photoshop which does more than I want it to. I haven't even learned all of it's features yet, so why in hell would I upgrade ? LOL I kill me - I just corrected a typo up there. It said "Pain Shop Pro". Think maybe that was a bit Freudian ? T
