As many will know, I have been researching the causes of nerve injuries during bondage. It has been extremely hard to get much data. I appreciate that many people seem unduly shy about reporting injuries as they seem to regard it as an inditement of the dom's skills. This is as ridiculous as not talking about sprains in contact sports. Yes, nerve injury can be caused by poor technique but it is something that 'comes with the territory', especially if you do suspension. There is always some risk, especially with the more minimalist suspensions encompassing the arms. The only sure way to find out if somebody can take suspension is to suspend them and that means you only find out after the event. Medical diagrams are only a guide to nerve paths, we are all VERY different. Some people seem almost impervious, others get nerve damage sleeping in the wrong position. The results from this research will never be definitive. However, with your input we can improve our knowledge of what works or doesn't work for MOST of the people, MOST of the time. If you have any incident reports that would help, especially with photos of the actual rig, please post them here: http://www.forumbondage.com/html/incidents.html No names, no pack drill! You can remain anonymous if it really bothers you.

I'm curious, is this research that you are doing? Is it just curious investigation or is it structured research? The reason why I ask is that you might be able to get more information if you conduct your research in an official manner, set up with a methodology that has been reviewed by an ethics committee much like one would find in an higher education academic institution like a university. You might even get funding to do so. I know a few academics in North America who's thesis is directly related to kink.

Of course, you can get some data through collecting anectodal accounts, but you seem to want to go further. On another "f" network, there is a group for post graduate studies in kink and perhaps there is someone who can help you out with this. Message me on the other side if you are interested and I can see with the forum moderator there.

I know sweet FA about research methodologies, nor do I have the expertise for high level research. If anyone wishes to take it there, be my guest! Meanwhile, this is a humble attempt to gain some guidance from 'in the field experience' and porduce something the man in the street can understand, not an academic treatise only understandable by PhDs. That being said, what I have published so far has invited peer review and has been checked by well qualified medical folk. I'm well aware of the pitfalls of this appraoch. However, there so many variables that no amount of research will make bondage a science.

I'm speculating that maybe there isn't a lot of documentation about nerve damage from bondage because there isn't a lot of permanent nerve damage from bondage.  If you think about it, how many people are in terrible accidents like car crashes and if they have nerve damage at all, they usually recover from it.  I would think the bondage predicaments would have to be very extreme and occur over long periods of time to actually cause permanent nerve damage.  If a nerve is bruised or irritated, it would most likely recover in a few days or weeks.

No problem :-) It was simply a suggestion. Good luck in your research!

@Windchymes There's a lot of other research about conditions that aren't permanent, so why should nerve damage be any different? There's certainly a lot of bondage-related temporary nerve damage about, so anything to reduce it must be a good thing. True, one could regard it as a transient and common by-product, like bruises from CP, but it's a lot more debilitating. A bruised butt won't usually put you off work but if you can't hold a pen or dress unaided for a month...

I am a nurse, and during my stint of OR training, it was stressed to us the importance of taking care in the positioning and restraint of a person.  Patients are often positioned during surgery in the "crucifix" position, with arms straight out in 90 degree angle to the body.  We were told by our instructors that exceeding this angle can cause permanent nerve damage, with the risk of damage increasing as the time elapses.  I do not know how many people have actually been harmed, but this information was added to our training because a pretty spectacular amount of money was awarded to the patient on account of negligence.   When a person is positioned on the back in the lithotomy position (mainly used when delivering babies or kidney stones :) damage can happen if the legs are held in stirrups and there is pressure at the back of the knee.  We secured the feet by strapping a cushion to the feet so that they could be suspended from the stirrups, but we were instructed to have the heels resting on the cushion; if the feet were strapped  with toes extended (picture a ballerina's foot) a condition called "foot drop" could occur fairly quickly.  There are lots of ways that someone can be injured during bondage, especially if adrenaline and endorphins are flowing.  You might find it useful to consult a surgical nursing textbook, as safe restraint is a major focus in the OR.

I doubt any reliable statistics on bondage injury can be gleaned from ER reports.  Most people would report the injury as having occurred due to an accident, rather than say "I was being suspended from the bedroom ceiling, and my shoulder dislocated."

Good grief. How many hours would this person be in bondage? Having been bound for hours, the most that happened to me (besides multiply inflicted orgasms) was that my shoulders got sore, to which I spoke up.. and was moved to a more comfy position.

DesFIP -> RE: Bondage injury (12/16/2009 4:51:28 AM)

He had me in a strappado, arms behind my back tied to an overhead beam. I was in heels and wearing panties. He decided to slip off the panties and when he told me to raise a foot I slipped. Fell to my left, wrenched my arm. Two months before I had 75% use back and a good six months for full recovery. I could type and use a pen but couldn't carry groceries in that arm for a while.

I've always said the moral of that story is that I should be barefoot in future. Stilettoes are for lying down only.

SirRussellP -> RE: Bondage injury (12/19/2009 7:10:08 PM)

The suspension I have done I have used the more is better rule.  I don't use rope on the body of my slave only leather cuffs and belts.  I make sure that there is a belt under shoulders one in mid back and one under hips, then one on each each wrist, ankle, knee, thigh and upper arm.  It takes longer to rig but I don't really worry about circulation or too much pressure on any body part and know that I can enjoy her most any way I want to.

I also make sure that no body part is put into an unnatural position for more then a few minutes at a time.  Though I must admit I love the look of her arms bound behind her back and wrists pulled up high towards her neck.
