I wouldn't tell anybody whose business it wasn't. The news is public anyway, right?

With the part I would invest, I'd do it extremely conservatively, except: with about 10% I'd have fun investing in some more risky things that I've done well with in the past, and I would seed a couple of startups for close relatives.

I would start a trust fund for my grandchildrens' and cousins' (once removed) college educations.

1.  Hire a financial advisor and make sure taxes are paid, trust funds are set up for the children, and solid, conservative investments are made for our retirement.

2. Pay off all debts (car, house, student loans, etc.)

3. Repair the van.  (Yes, I could get a new one, but I love my Abby.)

4. Trade in the other 2 cars for 1 new, fuel efficient family sedan.

5. Splurge on 1 luxury vehicle each for Spyder and I.  (He likes classic muscle cars, I like Jags.)

6. Remodel the house (new kitchen, baths, energy efficient windows, siding, etc.) and put it up for sale.

7. Buy or build a house large enough so we can have 4 bedrooms plus an office, play room for kids, craft room, exercise room, and fully equipped dungeon.

8. Spyder wants to go back to school to add to his IT certifications.  His ultimate goal is to have enough of them to earn six figures.

9. Pay off houses/cars for both sets of parents.

10. Live on what Spyder makes once he's got his certifications and let the rest of the money earn interest.  Use the interest to help family members as needed and donate to various charities.

I would pay off my bills, quit my job, move, start my own biz and buy a new  home of my preference, I would help with my daughter's college and put the rest away for a rainy day and probably invest some as well in some way.

The only people I would tell are Master and my daughter. They are the only ones who really would have any need to know.

I would NOT tell my family or friends. Been there done that doesn't work out well at all.

a couple years back, I was listening to NPR and they were interviewing a lottery winner, I think from the UK....the best point the guy made was this...he would help out his family members...but, if he had not heard from them other than on holidays for the last two years, they would not be getting anything.  I like that attitude.

I agree....although I would have exceptions.  There are relatives who I hear from occasionally who are really cool people. I wouldn't hesitate to help them out...and no they wouldn't ask for money.

I never play the lottery, so I have no chance of ever winning it, but it doesn't stop me from dreaming about what I'd do with all the dough.

I would: pay off our house, secure our children's university funds, go on holidays for a year or so, and buy a couple more properties in London and Istanbul.

Then I'd go to law school, and once I got my law license, I'd become a lawyer for people who can't afford to pay for one, and I'd defend those causes that are so unpopular with conservatives - you know, like suing the tobacco industry and all the other rogues.

What a wonderful life it would be  , not having to work for a profit!

Who hasn’t had the lottery fantasy? It might seem a strange fantasy to have when you don’t play the lottery but it’s just another version of the “sudden wealth” fantasy. So let’s fantasize.

The Stewie version: I’d kidnap the worlds greatest scientists and force them to build me a giant ray gun with which I could take over world.

The BDSM version: Oh, it’s gotta be the super private BDSM island resort in the South Pacific. What else could it be? Mine will be a male dominants/female submissives only island. To all my Female dominant/male submissive friends; I luv ya and I got nothing against you or your kink but you’ll have to get your own island – this is gonna be our party land. Of course that doesn’t mean we can’t occasionally get together and party say, Halloween or New Years’ – that would be fun.

The reality version: I would definitely take my time before coming forward publicly. The first few people I would tell would be my mother and one of my sisters (I don’t want to give any misunderstanding, I love my other sister dearly – but she can be a blabber mouth). I would hire a lawyer and find a place to stay away from my apartment for a few days or longer if necessary. At the press conference (I would tell the rest of my family and some friends before the press conference) they always make lotto winners have I would simply keep repeating that I am very happy. When they ask (as they inevitably will) if I plan to donate to charity I would say “Yes, however, I will decide upon my own what charities to donate to and the MORE a charity solicits me the LESS likely I will be to donate it. Then I’d wait until interest in “the story” passed.

Now; what to do with all that money? My grandfather once told me that there are only four things you can do with money. Well six, actually, but burning it and wiping your ass with it are both pretty stupid so that effectively leaves four: You can save it, you can invest it, you can give it away or you can spend it.

I would do all four. I’d divide it in four and put one fourth into various savings accounts and CDs. I would invest one fourth probably dividing that share into thirds for low, medium, and high risk investments. I’d probably buy some stock but I would try to make most of my investments local. I would give away one fourth. Most of that would be to members of my family and a few close friends who have stuck with me through thick and thin. I’d make some donation to some national charity (like the Red Cross) but most of my charitable donations would be local. The local food pantries, the local clothes closets, and maybe start some art scholarships for local students.

And then, of course, I’d spend one fourth. Log cabin in the woods with satellite television, wide screen tv, jacuzi, etc, etc, HERE I COME!

Good questions.

I would spend it on me at first and probably donate money to charities that really needed it and which i liked.

I would keep quiet about it because i have watched shows where people won and everybody came out of the woodwork expecting the money.

Success breeds envy and discontentment unfortunately...

Lotteries are a tax on uneducated people and the poor. Put your money in a good growth fund instead.

I did.  It lost about 50% over the past two years.

If you would have put it in a lottery, you would have lost 100% of it.

Just so you know, a sole propriatorship does not continue after the sole propriator's death. They company would be dissolved and the assets distributed as per your will.

$77 million you say?  Reading that on the electronic scroller about the Quik-e-Mart checkout would get me to buy a dollar's worth of dreams.  To the damn "bad investment" tightasses on the subject, I say, "Duh!  It's from the entertainment budget, stupid!

We would clear all debt, make sure the parents were covered, and gift money to certain friends.  Then, I'm thinking a little bit of acreage not too far from a nice city and raise kids and dogs.  And long roadtrips in a really nice RV, maybe pulling a car for when we spend time in cities.

The funny thing is, I spend the odd dollar here and there, dream a little dream, and wind up going weeks without checking the numbers.  Last time I scanned the tickets in my wallet at the liquor store, I got my six-pack free, and put change in my pocket.

Too true. We toss spare change into a bucket. I often round my checks at work to quarters ( server here). A dollar twice a week wont kill our budget, and, ya just never know!

I wouldn't tell anyone except the attorney I'd hire immediately, before even going to turn in the ticket and collect my winnings. And before even THAT happened, he'd be under a gag order as a condition of being put under retainer. Once I had my winnings, I'd move to Australia, taking everything with me. Once getting settled, I'd send word to my family back here and let them know what had happened and where I am. Upon my brother turning 18, he'd find himself in possession of a tidy little trust fund that would not only pay his way through college and med school (he wants to be a doctor), but he'd also have enough so that he'd never have to work a day in his life. His biological family (they're my stepfamily) would be set up rather nicely as well, because they're all raising him together, and are doing a hell of a job. My father wouldn't get jack shit, and neither would my estranged sister.

After all this was settled, I'd move to Fraser Island, set up permanent residence there as close to the beach as I could possibly get, and just spend the rest of my days being as worry-free as possible. Anything I had left when I die would get split 80/20 between my hospice nurse and my final attorney.

A note for those who figure they'll keep the whole thing secret.  Ain't gonna happen.  Winners names are public record (and they damn well better be!).

Here are a few fine potential life partners now...

38 mil
-10 mil to buy my house and the house next door, a damn nice place in canada, probably N.S., maybe Ont., outside possiblilty of Newfoundland. and open my bbq restaurant there (actually there's a place I'm looking at in NS at the moment anyway), a couple new cars (Audi R8 and 1956 baby-T), fix up my current car completely (Yes, I love my car that much), get things all settled in comfy and furnished and live off of.  Seriously, after flat out buying that stuff, if I can't live on what's left from 10mil (which should be around 3-4 mil at the very least) then there's something majorly wrong with me.

-10 mil
Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Utah Aids Foundation, my veterinarian's assistance fund, the V.A. Rec. Therapy department/D.A.V.

18 mil left?  Most likely hook up my friends.  House and car and 2mil per household.  That should tide them over just peachy.
Let's call that -15 mil.

3 mil left?  Into the savings/living fund with that too I guess.  Good to have a bit of a buffer, no?

I'd also have them knock me out for 3 months and pull all my teeth out and replace them with those lovely anchored implants.

Oh, and I'd have one fucking MASSIVE christmas party!

Who would I tell.  Not as many as one might imagine.  None of most people's business.

Invest?  Hell no!  Nor am I looking at banks.  They make these big ass safes that can be sunk into a concrete foundation.  Far safer.  Hell, far safer to set it on a big table in the middle of the street with a sign that says "do not touch", and walk away than it is to invest or trust it in the hands of banks.

Would my current relationships change?  Most likely.  I'd take us to canada and I could actually get married!  That would also change the pets relationship as he wouldn't have to travel back and forth because of stupid visitation time length rules.  I'm guessing that with 30whatever mil in cash, they wouldn't worry too much about how I'd support myself there, which would free up a lot of headache in the immigration paperwork.

But that's just the logistics of the relationships.  Otherwise, no, not really.  Other than I'd probably spoil the pet even more than ever.

I'm guessing 30some mil isn't enough to resurrect Freddy Mercury, is it?  Damn... didn't think so.

I think I'd buy some rural land, build a mini-town, that was fully self-sustained electricity wise, water wise, and sewer would be handled in an environmentally rational way. I'd run huge fiber to it. Each house would have enough room for a garden behind it, that would be required to be farmed, if the homeowner(they don't really "own" it just have permanent rights, if meet conditions) didn't want to farm it, then they would have to allow others to utilize the "garden section" to grow food.

I'd then take homeless people, drug addicts, or people wanting a fresh start. The contract would be each of them will have to take a drug test every month, if they fail they are gone, forever. They must also take Technology related classes, and work towards building money producing websites, or services. Applicants must have average or higher intelligence, as deemed by testing, in order to join the community. The money produced from these websites or services will help fund the community. They must pass all classes with a B average or higher. If they fail to pass at a B or higher they must retake the class, they are allowed only one retake a semester.  The "community" will own all the rights, and intellectual properties produced during their first 5 or 6 years in the community.

During year 6 they will be given the ability to head their own project, after 6 years of successful drug testing, and having earned a degree. They can select to either leave, owing nothing, with 20K in cash, and ownership of their year 6 endeavor.  Or they can stay, still have to take drug tests, they will get paid a reasonable amount, they will have lifetime rights to their house (provided they stay clean, and work in the community).

The grocery store, will be zero profit, enterprise, though only members of the community can shop at it. Child care will be provided by the community. Purchases will be bought in bulk.

Overnight Visitors are only allowed up to a week / month, with a permanent community member signing for them. Daily visitors, can only enter the town after 8 AM and must leave by 10 PM.  No one can move in without joining the community program, and agreeing to the rules. NO EXCEPTIONS. All people in the community will be issued access cards coupled with thumbprint scanners, for accessing any community facility 24 hours a day. All community facilities (Grocery Store, Pharmacy(not 24 hours), Rec area, Community equipment, School area), will be 100% (except bathrooms), under video surveillance.

All buildings and property are subject to search at anytime for any reason, without warning.

No groceries of value greater than 5.00 dollars can leave the community (subsidized store), no equipment can leave the community. No equipment, or anything or value can enter the community, except with prior approval, and or through the regular channels (store).

No High speed vehicles will exist, in side the town limits, you will park them outside, and simply, ride an electric vehicle in.

No Alcohol, No Drugs. No Exceptions. If you want to get drunk, you probably should rent a hotel room in the town you do it in, and don't bring any in.

Infractions, outside the mandatory expulsion events, will be voted on by the community at large, and the appropriate punishments, or penalties. They either submit to the ruling or leave.

This is a community for people that have fucked up hard, to get back into a healthy position. This is the purpose, thus the hard rules.  If they fail, they can't say they weren't given the chance.

I'd have an oceanfront home in the Outer Banks.
No one in my family would have a mortgage or debt. Good friends too.
My kids and all of my nieces and nephews would have their college paid for.
I'd have the best camera equipment.
Regular donations to my favorite charities.
I'd own a waterfront tavern somewhere along the Jersey shore...
I'd have the best fucking tattoos covering my body.
