And yet a whole lot of atheists voted in a man who didnt believe atheists should be citizens.

Interesting bit of info.

Thanks for setting that straight. I'm sure it's clear to everyone now.

Kim, I once went to a UU service.  That's ALL they offer - socialization, community, and discussion of moral issues.  They actually do not take a stance on the existence of G_d!

I wonder why they chose that name then, as it is definately misleading.

A church without worship? What's the point?

Kim.

You misread my post in your zeal to respond.

I was talking about the faithful, not atheists.

thornhappy -> RE: Can't serve if you don't believe in God? (12/14/2009 6:51:57 AM)

You mean, without your style/mode of worship.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Can't serve if you don't believe in God? (12/14/2009 7:29:43 AM)

To Me, it sounds pretty unconstitutional.  and re: the statement about Theocracies.  I tell a lot of the bible thumpers around here that "If you want to live in a Theocracy, go to Iran"

Dang, when you said "serve", I thought you were saying that atheists were barred from being subs or slaves...

I thought the same thing. I'm not sure if its a bad idea; barring atheists from being subbies/slaves. They make for unusal scenes during playtime:

THWACK!

"OH NOBODY!"

THWACK!

"OH NOBODY!"

And then there is the actual sex:

"OH NOBODY! OH GOOD NOBODY! I'M COMING!"

As for the main topic, it is obviously unconsitutional to bar somebody from political office just because they are an atheist which means this suit can be nothing more than a publicity stunt.

FR

Not to be so bold as to address the original point of the OP.......

I'm not sure where it is exactly in the Law, but people are allowed to attest rather than swear. People might joke around about a "certain" ethnic President taking his oath on the Koran, or who knows. It is not required to be our book, if it is indeed our book in the first place. In fact is the book even required ? What of an Atheist's book ? What might that be ? A physics book by Nelkon and Parker ?

Fucking religion, I wish they had never invented it. It only serves as a distraction, and if we ain't got proof right here, we need to see an eye doctor.

This guy might be an asshole worthy of recall, but this is not the grounds, not in my country.

No, I just wasn't sure of the implication.

My implication is that separation of church and state was, and remains, a damn good idea.

I'd like to see it continue. I'm disappointed when people claim differently.

Such disappointment has nothing at all to do with atheist/religious/whateverist, but with the sanctity of a key Constitutional principle--one I would think religious people should value perhaps more than all others!

Because you can belong to a church and view it as a way to socialize and interact with the community in a positive way without believing.

So that's how liberals can give Obama a free pass on belonging to a Black Idiology church...

Do you mean "ideology?" Or are you thinking of the word "idiot?"

Mine was simply ‘let our words match our actions’.

You say, and I’m sure many others will agree with you, there is a separation of church and state; it seems to me, the people only traded one church for another.

And who do you serve? God or mammon?

A penny for your thoughts? Who said that? Abraham Lincoln? His head is on the penny.

A phrase that has nothing to do with the Constitution, though.

Musicmystery -> RE: Can't serve if you don't believe in God? (12/14/2009 10:00:13 AM)

In fact, religious Teddy Roosevelt vigorously opposed adding "in god we trust" to currency. He saw it as sacrilege.

Frankly, I agree.

But well more than a century past the founders of the country.
