Something happened on another thread that made me curious.... If i say (type) ....

Not ALL men are D-types, rather, SOME men are D-types, and some are not.

and then, if i were to say (type) it this way....

Not all men are D-types, rather, some men are D-types, and some are not.

Is the 1st sentence offensive because of the way i used font? Are they both offensive because of the font style, and the 1st is just more offensive because of large font?

Thank you for that Aileen, but i don't like to be offensive in general....and if just not enlarging some words could help do that, then i would like to know.

So you're saying someone found your use of 2 different font sizes in the same sentence offensive? If that's true, fuck 'em. Anybody who's that easily offended, it's not worth making any sort of effort not to offend them. Even if you get everything else absolutely, 100% perfect, they'll probably just whine about the period at the end of the sentence not being perfectly round.

Right-on....i was thinking perhaps ex large font looks like i am shouting perhaps?....And thats easily fixed.

I occasionally capitalize words for emphasis. If that bothers someone they have the power to ignore my posts. There are several posters that have a wonky font thing going on. Sometimes I glace at their post, figure there isn't enough substance for my eyes to fight the battle of reading it and move on. I am sure they do not care that I ignore their posts.

i understand using all capitalization for a word generally represents shouting.  E-mail etiquette guidelines often mention this. Italics seem interchangeable with underlining to indicate vocal emphasis (through elongation of the word when read aloud) as well as typing additional vowels within a word.  Like emoticons,  they can give us clues about tone and therefore meaning of a post but since it is an informal, newly developing dialect it's an imperfect art rather than a strict science. Is there a professional linguist studying informal internet language usage in the house?  i'm sure they'll have something much more better to say. [;)]
Try these out loud and see how they sound to you:
"I am SO offended by petmonkey's post."
"I am soooo offended by petmonkey's post."
"I am so offended by petmonkey's post."

I tend to use caps way more than I use italics or bold, but that's mainly because I'm lazy.  And really, in limited use on a forum or what not, I think it gets the idea across the same.  *shrug*  Maybe that's just me though.

I figure that each person has their own unique way to emphasize a specific word in order to place a stronger meaning to the gist of what they are trying to state. Sometimes I will capitalize a word to indicate a greater emphasis on that sentence so the exact meaning isn't lost. I'm sure if another is that fussy then I'll hear about it!

i do the same as others have mentioned with capitalizing words for effect. i see that exlarge font can be interpreted as shouting...thats good for me to remember.

I don't perceive isolated words in all caps to be shouting - merely emphasis; I do it myself sometimes.  A whole string of words in all caps I would definitely interpret as shouting.  Another convention for emphasis is to put an asterisk around the word(s) in question.  For example, "I am *so* offended by petmonkey's post."

To me, it just says that you're very emphatic or passionate about that particular word or concept, which I don't find offensive at all.

bolding and highlighting have always been used in text books to make a point...
indicate a heading.. or to get attention to make a point..
 
As you know I use color..fonts..bolding..italic..much ot the chagrin and reulsion of several andmuch to the delight of SOME
 
I am not offended and appreciate things written in such a way..being an old school marm and all

I don't get offended by font.  But I do feel that enlarging, capping and bolding words is a bit much and actually loses emphasis.  I gloss over them, thinking that post is probably too emotionally driven.

I think the first example is slightly harder to read with the font size switch. I think bold type, italics or underlining are sufficient to get the message across and that is all I ever use but there different strokes for different folks. If you feel a larger font says something that a smaller font will not then use a larger font. People can ignore your post if they wish. It doesn't give the content of your post any extra meaning. Both examples say the same thing and have the same impact although the second example is not annoying in the process.

Using capitalization for emphasis is FINE.

USING ALL CAPS, ALL THE TIME, IS THE SIGN OF SOMEONE THAT IS FUCKED UP IN THE HEAD.

IMO the way to go is to enlarge, bold, and color fonts just enough to make sure that the emphasis will be readily recognized. Going beyond that isn't helpful.

On the other hand, going overboard on just a few words for emphasis is not offensive. Using huge fonts and all caps for the whole damned post, now that's really annoying, and approaching offensive.

I have objected to other people's fonts or choice of color before. But I have vision problems and I'm sensible enough to know they won't know this unless I tell them which I do. So I've then requested they stop doing the offensive practice as it makes reading their threads impossible.
