Aneirin -> By design, or just coincidence ? (12/16/2009 1:26:26 AM)

I have an interest in sacred Geometry from the stone circles, to the plan of the Chartres cathedral, and the use of symbology, and took to seeking out the use of ancient symbology in landscape. Now, I have been long aware of various applications of  the golden mean, pentagrams, vesica pisces, triangles, hexagrams and other ancient symbols in landscape  and nature in various parts of the world, cityplans and such, including Washington DC, but, is this by design, or is it just coincidence ?

And if by design, is there any power in symbology ?

What is the purpose of symbology ?

One of my favourite symbols, that of the pentagram, I took to wondering why it was so pleasing to the eye, and came upon the fact that it is tied in with the Golden Ratio, so I have that one sorted out now, but I wonder at other symbols from the ancient past, still used in the modern day world.

I think the public had decided the phallic monument.

More like duplication is easy but invention is hard.

It is possible we inherited a survival mechanism for recognizing patterns that helped our ancestors distinguish predator and prey, and maybe this pattern thinking became part of our communications tools. Given that, it would not be surprising that we find symbols pleasing since they represent patterns.
