It's a terrible state of affairs. See, I've been doing a lot of walking lately - 5, 6 miles a day, sometimes more. The problem is, what with the deep  cold we've been having, the air has been extremely dry. And my jeans have apparently abraded the back of my right calf into a rather uncomfortable rash. It's not going to kill me, but it's pretty damned irritating, because my pants leg rubs against it constantly. And it's too chilly to wear shorts. It's painful - much like a really bad sunburn - and starting to crack. The dry air is clearly making it worse, and I feel an urgency to nip this whole situation in the bud.

So, I figure the solution is to get some kind of lotion, to keep it from getting worse and to promote the healing of the skin. Trouble is, I know exactly nothing about skin lotions, except that it comes in a bottle. And it's bewildering, because when i go to the store and examine the endless wall of lotions, I can't tell any of them from any of the other 500 brands and varieties. They all seem different, but none of them are terribly clear on what - specifically -  they do. Do I want skin cream, do i want noxcema, do i want Nivea, do i want Vaseline Intensive Care, wtf... anyone know what the best product is for such a rash?

I know in the winter my legs get really dry and I develop rashes on them. The best thing I have found to help them is good ole Johnson Baby Lotion.

Gold Bond Extra Healing lotion in the evenings, sleep in shorts or nekkid from the waist down, and loose cotton pants like sweats (NOT jeans) during the day until the irritation is gone.

A&D Ointment (found in the baby aisle) is awesome stuff and i swear by it.

As to the continued irritation...did you think about wearing a pair of spandex bike shorts under your jeans?

I would recommend a cream with panthenol, and maybe some soft long underwear to keep the affected area from further irritation.

Hi Panda,
I get something similar.  Here's what I do - I put vaseline petroleum jelly on the affected area(s) and put on soft cotton clothes over night.  It allows my body to heal itself.  The vaseline basically just acts as a barrier to the air.  I would recommend that you wear long johns under your jeans (with the vaseline on the affected area if that doesn't squick you too much).

Also, you may want to increase your fluid intake.

Or you could just gnaw your leg off....

*grrr forget the ending...

Have a great day Panda!!!

It might also help to apply some mild cortisone ointment (say, 0.5%) on the affected area, especially overnight.

Get some underarmor or such to wear under your jeans. Bike shorts in warmer weather.

Hiya Panda,I have slight psoriasis, so I can relate quite a bit. For the severely dry areas I use a psoriasis mosturizing creme, twice a day, that has salisylic acid (2%), and the rest of the time Lubriderm for severe dry skin. Especially after showers you should use this. If it gets real bad, get a soft ace bandage to wrap the leg before walking, then afterwards roll it up and put it in a jacket pocket. Mine can get so severe that it cracks and bleeds in a few places, but if I stay on it with the above, it never even gets close.

I've had really good luck with Eucerin products, especially if it is itchy, or as kittin suggested, hydrocortisone cream can be bought at the dollar store...usually under anti-itch cream. Personally, I'm allergic to many of the above suggestions, like Johnson's and A&D, so if you have any allergies, choose carefully.

Another product that is great for dry and cracked skin is this stuff called "Miracle Foot Repair". I've used it on my hands, feet, legs...and it works so well!

Also, go to a sporting goods store and buy a pair of silk long johns. Skiers wear them, and they will isolate the chafed area from your jeans so you can heal.

Buncha druggies.  A problem arises, and all they think about is medications...

Panda, have you thought about getting roomier pants, maybe something less abrasive than denim? Maybe tape some cotton to the inside of the pants where your bruise is?

Because I live in Iowa and this time of year involves a lot of time outdoors, cold and dry, indoors, hot and dry........I've been suffering terrible dry skin the last few years because of hormonal changes.

I have discovered Burt's Bees products and without any exaggeration, it has damned near changed my life. No petroleum products, can use less product, I understand the list of ingredients, product lasts longer on the skin, no strong perfumey scents, no animal testing. I tossed out a whole bunch of other stuff, many were listed on this thread, because they just do not work as well as the Burt's Bees stuff.

I keep a tin of the hand salve here at work because I wash my hands a lot some days AND, handling paper just sucks the moisture right out of my skin. Here is the list of ingredients.

Sweet almond oil, olive oil, beeswax, tocopherol (vitamin E), comfrey root extract, rosemary oil and leaf extract, lavandin oil and flower extract, eucalyptus oil.

Nothing that I mind putting on my skin. I also use their body creme, it is wonnnnnnnnnderful if you don't mind smelling like honey for a few hours, and their lip balm.

Panda, you need to be careful about that calf rash!

If you let it go untreated, it might spread and you could get Kneesels!
From Kneesels, it is just a short viral jump into full blown Smallcocks!

Be careful!

Seriously, how about putting a bandage and then wearing a pair of long johns.
