Could be anything, Lucy. A Pentagon that is about to ask for more money for our next generation of unmanned equipment might have a reason to let such info out. It could also be just another masturbatory attempt at a Bush bash. Maybe it was a slow news day, and somebody pulled an old story off the spike to cover a cancelled ad.
The "hope for the best" approach might have been the best decision for the circumstances. These things aren't cheap. They don't last forever. Do we spend the money upgrading the current fleet, or build the fixes into following models and the new designs on the drawing board?
At the same time, we should never forget that this is a smart enemy (how many learned their engineering in US schools, I wonder). If we are going to be killing them by remote control, keeping a mighty tight grip on the frequency and data links is going to be critical.
