Hi everyone - The biggest loser thread has become so popular that I thought I would start this one for all those folks (like myself) who are in the midst of dealing with work stuff - unemployment, wanting to change professions, underemployment, returning to work, university / training stuff. What do you think? Can we support each other with this too? I will tell you that I have had my own issues around this. I want to go back to school and am having a hard time signing up for classes. I want to take some pre-admissions kinds of classes (I have half of them already - now I need a few others). I know I need to take them online because of my travel stuff, but I have a hard time getting the info, making myself contact places, things like that. Questions come up - What school should I go to for online courses? Out of state tuition? Can I take do elearning at any time or do I need to be available for specific time frames (I DON"T want to be in "class" at 3 a.m.)... That is my current dilemma. How 'bout you all? best, sunshine

I taking classes at the local community college & they have some online class. I haven't taken any yet, but my understanding is that homework will have due dates & quizzes/tests have a time frame. Best thing I can tell you is to check around. Community colleges are the cheapest, followed in state colleges & then out of state colleges. Finanical aid is worth applying for even if you don't think you'll qualify. Free application for federal student aid.

I started taking classes to become a massage therapist back in March, and have 4 more months to go. This, coupled with working full-time and buying a fixer-upper home last January has made for a very tiring year, but I love it and can't wait to finish. My encouragement to any and all is to just take it one day at a time, one paper or project at a time, one test at a time, and don't lose sleep over your GPA. Just do your best, pass the test, and move on to the next course. Good luck, sunny! :)

For those of you who are over 60, many Colleges and Universities will let us take classes with NO tuition. For Spring i've signed up for "Movie Classics" in the Humanities department. It should be interesting. I took several on-line classes through Tulsa Community College in Tulsa, Oklahoma - British Literature, American Literature, Art History...

I have my Final MB exams in less than a month. Should not be reading the forums at 3.50am... My uni has loads of free night classes and extras you can sign up for. I'm thinking it's all cheaper in the UK anyway though, so probably no help.

Sunny, Time requirements and/or restrictions will depend on the course, as I'm sure you know. When I was in school, all of my speech-language pathology courses were online. There were a few times when the instructor had scheduled a "live" lecture with some feedback requirements, but due technology glitches they never occurred. I ended up really enjoying the flexibility the online courses gave me. Heck, there were many times I'd be sitting in my jammies taking exams [:D]. I will add that being at home away from the social aspect of being in a classroom did take its toll on me, but I looked at it as a good learning process for me. I'm a social being and I thrive in social settings. ETA: After being out of the workforce for nearly 5 years I'm finally headed back come next month. I was offered a temp position as a SLP-A (speech language pathology assistant) which should last through the school year. I do hope this position will lead me to a perm position. At this point I feel fortunate just to have a chance to finally work again.

I have finished my doctoral application; now am just waiting for the results. Waiting impatiently for the results... checking e-mail nope. Still nothing.
