Brain -> Top 10 Fox News FAILS of 2009 (12/19/2009 5:41:31 PM)

I don’t watch Fox news much anymore, some CNN, a little more MSNBC, and even more PBS, especially the science shows like Nova and Bill Moyers. I love PBS on Sunday mornings

Top 10 Fox News FAILS of 2009!

Most of us know that Fox news is to news as MTV is to music. Since the 2003 court ruling giving the channel the right to lie on TV, they realized they didn’t have to be a credible news source as long as they are entertaining. And they do not disappoint (in being entertaining). The problem is what most of us find entertaining is the train wreck they call "reporters" and "news".

Brain did his homework. Why don't you do yours? Or would you like to stick with "I have no idea whether those other networks screwed up like Fox did but they had to because I don't like them?"

Check it out and then, if you don't find anything, you can tell us about the vast liberal conspiracy, point out three errors in the last year in the NYT shipping news section and then try to spin away all ten of these journalistic milestones. If you do, you can yell about how it's ok if Fox does these things because "All the other guys do it".

Because I dont give a fuck about rants about Fox or any other news media. Its a waste of time when anything anyone comes up with will be eye of the beholder bullshit.

Did you read the list? What part of it did you consider "eye of the beholder" bullshit? These were ten examples of poor, shoddy, unreliable journalism. If it had been the NYT, MSNBC, CNN or pajamas.com I would have said the same.

Why dont one of you  chaps have a look and come up with a counter list instead of attacking  a poster and not the message?

DomImus -> RE: Top 10 Fox News FAILS of 2009 (12/19/2009 6:57:56 PM)

I channel surf between CNN, MSNBC and Fox News adding the network news if it's that time of the day. Focusing on any one channel or locking out any one channel only yields a partial perspective. There are always stories that only one of them will carry and you won't hear about it if you have that station black balled. They all have their biases. I can watch a story on any of them and fairly accurately predict whether the others will cover that same story. I don't think we would even have a Fox News channel if CNN was not so liberal and Fox coming first would have spawned CNN in inverse fashion. Having a little bit of everything works out alright. The folks who get their news every day without every changing the channel are the ones missing out.

Because he is so eminently attackable and the "message" is the same old shit that passes for discussion here. Its been done over and over again, instant replay is booooorrrrring.

Kirata -> RE: Top 10 Fox News FAILS of 2009 (12/19/2009 7:19:58 PM)

~ FR ~

This is from 2004, but the findings were a surprise...

While the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal is conservative, the newspaper's news pages are liberal, even more liberal than The New York Times. The Drudge Report may have a right-wing reputation, but it leans left. Coverage by public television and radio is conservative compared to the rest of the mainstream media. Meanwhile, almost all major media outlets tilt to the left.

These are just a few of the surprising findings from a UCLA-led study, which is believed to be the first successful attempt at objectively quantifying bias in a range of media outlets and ranking them accordingly.

Bias is often a matter of what you consider to be bias. Where one man sees bias, another sees truth. But bias can be virtually invisible, because its methods are many and subtle.

Bias through selection and omission
Bias through placement
Bias by headline
Bias by photos, captions and camera angles
Bias through use of names and titles
Bias through statistics and crowd counts
Bias by source control
Bias by word choice and tone

The last evaluation I saw (though I can't find the link) found CNN to be the most center of the road outlet. That was a surprise, but maybe it just shows how far out some of the others have become.

Now your being unreasonable; it's "booooorrrrring" to you only because it’s true.

How many times does Fox News have to apologize for its fakery before some finally realize what a sham it is?

But since the subject was brought up, and we have a perfectly convenient thread here to discuss it, I challenge either of you to come up with those "fails" by "CNN, MSNBC, or any other news channel" that manages to consistently display this type of incompetence.

And when I say consistently it does not mean one incident regarding Dan Rather.

Though I doubt either challenge will be met.

Brain did his homework.

I think that's a little generous. Using the homework analogy Brain scours the lockers between classes and posts other people's homework. Some of the links are interesting, some not so much. He doesn't link to items in support of his own comments - his own attached commentary is often so scant as to be meaningless. The posts are mere pointers. As often as I disagree with your opinion SoT your posts are your opinion and display some critical thought and rarely are they just a regurgitation of a web link as Brain's are. Everybody posts a link now and again for discussion purposes. I've done it. I find the practice of making it the entire body of one's postings here in this forum to be rather disingenuous.

mnottertail -> RE: Top 10 Fox News FAILS of 2009 (12/20/2009 9:22:27 AM)

disingenuous

I will admit that there is not an insignificant commerce in the word as you use it, but it does actually mean insincere........

Just sayin'

Anyone who thinks for a second that Fox news is fair and balanced should ask themselves why the special report panel is made up of three conservatives and one token liberal. They should have equal numbers for fair and balanced commentating.

Fred Barnes (executive editor of the weekly Standard) Neoconservative
Mara Liasson (Correspondent for NPR) Conservative*
Charles Dracula (Syndicated columnist) Conservative*
Juan Williams (left of right or perhaps just slightly right of centre depending on what you count as the datum point) Token liberal but not really.

*Based on my wise opinion of what conservative chit chat sounds like (number of moans per sentence)
You may dispute this but I say nay I’ve done my research.

edited to add:

I'm still researching Bill Kristol but let us just assume he is a neoconservative based on his smug looking face.

You really have to wonder whether Bill Kristol is a neo-con?

No I was just needing to find a way to mention his smug looking face.

Also they employ on this same rotating panel some ex-bush aid whose name escapes me.

Poor Juan Williams he is so outnumbered when he tries to see something from the Obama administrations point of view.

I think it is really overt I'm not sure how anyone can claim they don't see it. Practically every commentator is to the right of centre.

I know some supposed leftist media organisations have the same charges of bias levelled against them but at least they try to demonstrate they are unbiased by giving each side equal time. Fox news doesn't even bother, the thing is they repeat the mantra 'fair and balanced' so often it doesn't matter that they aren’t because it's like a kind of brainwashing techniques where if they say it enough times people will see it as true. I’m going to have to do some research on this but I’m sure it is a well known technique.

and here is the fruits of my labour:
quote:

1. Repeating Slogans
Every leader of a cult, every military sergeant, and every politician is aware of this technique. In order to silence those intrusive doubts that your crowd may have, get them to repeat or chant a catchy phrase or slogan. This method is one of the techniques referred to as "thought stopping", because good or bad, they are found to do exactly that

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1739540/5_brainwashing_techniques_used_in_everyday.html

That research didn't take as long as I thought it would.[:D]

It escapes me too.

On purpose, because I try to ignore the dickhead as much as possible.
