Arpig -> Another topical poem... (12/19/2009 11:07:22 PM)

NOW THAT HE’S GONE

I went to the greenhouse
But the orchid was wilted
Open windows let in the snow
Stripped of my joy and my pride
Just last year I was his bride
When he left how was I to know
He said he would love me
Could not live without me
But that was all so long ago
But now he’s gone
The TV still on
I asked my god what it was that went wrong
Nobody answered me, not even a word

There beside the Euphrates
He was driven to his knees
What an unlikely place to die
And when he fell to the ground
With a wound so profound
I wonder did he really know why
A stranger with a gun
Orphaned his unborn son
I’m not ready to say goodbye
But still he’s gone
Just another pawn
And I’m left here to find some way to be strong
And the questions they ask seem so absurd

And it’s just too hard to think
Won’t someone fix me a drink
Just to chase the shadow away
I loved him so much
And I so miss his touch
And the games that we used to play
How can I tell our daughter
Why he went to slaughter
And explain why he just couldn’t stay
And that come the dawn
He still will be gone
And she’ll never fall asleep to his song
Her sobs are the worst sound I’ve ever heard

And though it may seem senseless
For a boy from Kansas
To end his life way over there
By the rivers of Babylon
In the dark of the predawn
He felt he had to do his share
They say he died to protect us
For freedom and for justice
But I find that I don’t really care
Now that he’s gone
I just can’t go on
I lie here alone and I wonder how long
Till my sight will again be unblurred

Outside children are singing
And the phones are still ringing
And I really should wash my hair
And wherever you are
Be it near or be it far
Take the time to say a small prayer
For the brave and the few
Who die for me and you
And never stop to ask if it’s fair
For those like my John
For those who are gone
For the brave boys who will never come home
And for those they leave behind in this world
